Police Blotter Week of 7.6.09: Hot dog relishes drink
Thu, 07/02/2009
On 58th Southwest, on a sunny, 75-degree day, citizens alerted officers to a dog locked in a car. The windows were rolled down about two inches. A plastic bowl of water had fallen onto the floor and spilled. The officer was able to unlock the car and noted that the interior was “very hot.” The excited dog was taken to the shade, immediately lapped up a bowl of water, and was covered in towels soaked in cold water by a citizen who works in animal rescue. After 20 minutes the owner appeared and dismissed the officers' concerns, saying that he did it “all the time, even in Florida,” and that said the officers were “insulting him” by suggesting the danger of the situation. Animal Control wasn't able to respond, but suggested officers write up a report and forward it to them. The man and his dog were released.
In the 5400 block of 31st Southwest, two citizens are concerned about an acquaintance they have caught peeking into their children's bedrooms. The 28-year-old suspect also arrived at their home late one night dressed in camouflage gear and a bulletproof vest. A friend who accompanied him had a machete. A records check showed that the suspect is a convicted felon and registered sex offender. The citizens have been told to call 911 immediately if the man shows up again.
City arborists will be examining photographs and measurements taken of some tree cutting that occurred near residences above the Fairmount Canyon Canyon (2300 block of Walnut Southwest) to determine if the trimming, which occurred Thursday afternoon, was legal.
Two boys were playing in their yard on Thursday, in the 3200 block of 61st, when they heard a suspicious noise come from inside the home. Going inside to investigate, they reported seeing two men hiding inside a closet. The boys ran to a neighboring home and called police. The suspects were gone by the time officers arrived, but might have been associated with a blue, four-door, Honda sedan.
Though elderly, a local man recognized that a woman who had come to “visit” was someone who had stolen money from him in the past and whom he has a protection order against. The victim managed to call his daughter in Tacoma who alerted Seattle police. Officers arrived and arrested the woman for violating the court order. The man was unharmed.
In the 3200 block of Alki, officers were called when two contractors installing some security cameras were sprayed with water by a resident of a nearby condo. The suspect, who has a history of offenses, claimed he was watering plants (which, officers noted, were ten feet below the cameras being installed). Officers also noted that the cameras, with exposed wires were dripping wet, and that the suspect had reportedly stated, “I guess those cameras are going to have a hard time working now.” The 53-year-old suspect was booked into King County Jail.
Early Tuesday, an officer on routine patrol spotted a woman lying in a planting strip near 41st and Alaska. Unconscious, but breathing, she finally sat up and responded to questions posed by medics. Though she responded, the answers weren't suited to the questions; she claimed to be dying and said that she loved her brother. She couldn't explain why her pants were down, and she showed no signs of a struggle or injury. Feeling that she was depressed and a danger to herself, the officer and medics had her transported to Harborview for a mental evaluation.
Around 8 the same morning, a citizen found a woman in a garage in the 4800 block of California Avenue Southwest. Seated in her own urine and feces, her dress soaked, she claimed to have walked there from Bellingham the previous day. Nearby was a bag with empty gallon milk containers, pop bottles and food bags. She seemed to understand the questions she was being asked, but she responded slowly and with occasionally delusional statements. She was identified as a 49-year-old Bellingham resident and was taken to Harborview for involuntary commitment.
