More than $1.35 million was raised at Woodland Park Zoo's premiere fundraiser, Jungle Party, last Friday.
More than 800 civic, community and philanthropic leaders journeyed to Woodland Park Zoo’s premier fundraiser, Jungle Party, last Friday night to support the zoo’s animal care, education programs and conservation projects around the world. More than $1.35 million was raised at the 33rd annual event.
“Global Affair: Celebrate the Wild & Rare” marked this year’s theme to commemorate all the endangered species living at the zoo.
“I am honored to co-chair an event that supports one of Puget Sound’s most important institutions," said 2009 Jungle Party Co-chair Nancy Pellegrino. "The funds raised will help the zoo continue to provide the best care for its animals, deliver awe-inspiring education to tens of thousands of kids, and preserve wildlife and habitat across the globe and in our backyard."
Included in the $1.35 million raised were contributions of $500,000 toward this year’s Fund-Our-Future: Save a Species.
“These critical funds will help support the zoo’s 40-plus endangered species through recovery in the wild, vital work of conservation projects, education programs and exhibit upgrades," said 2009 Jungle Party Co-chair Jan Hendrickson. "Many thanks to Jungle Party patrons for supporting one of the jewels in the crown of our region."
Jungle Party was held outdoors on the zoo's North Meadow where zoo patrons were treated to the fun and funky South American sounds of Show Brazil!, a lion dance performed by Mak Fai Washington Kung Fu Club, exhibit tours, a delectable seated dinner catered by Ray's Boathouse Catering, a drink bar with rare concoctions from Restaurant Zoë, and a live and silent auction with more than 500 auction items.
Several items sparked bidding enthusiasm including: Georgia Gerber’s “Ice Bears” sculpture, which sold twice for $11,000 apiece; a drive-in movie for 20 on the zoo’s North Meadow at $9,500; a road trip for two with the Seattle Seahawks for $8,000; dinner for 10 at Canlis Restaurant with Hedges Family Estate Wines for $10,000; and a romantic overnight package at the zoo for $7,500.
“We are very grateful to our zoo patrons for making another Jungle Party a resounding success,” said Woodland Park Zoo President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Deborah Jensen. “The generosity shown will help us keep making forward strides in saving wildlife around the world for future generations, connecting children to the natural wonders of the world and providing excellent animal care at our zoo.”
