It's time to run for car seat safety!
The first ever Burien Brät 5K Race and Family Relay event on Sunday, Oct. 4 promises to bring out the "wúrst" in everyone while racers young and mature find two excellent events on one place followed by revelry and community fun at the finish line.
Racers will gather in Olde Burien on Sunday afternoon, lace up their shoes and take off on a level 5K route around Burien.
Serious "Brät" Runners or Walkers looking for a 3+-mile route can participate in a traditional 5K with a start and finish line at the Tin Room.
Families or kids (aka Little Links) can opt into the fabulously fun 5K Brat-ton Relay race where teams can divide into legs of roughly 1.5, 1 and .5 miles each.
Super sausages can even run in an official Brät Suit available through on-line registration. At the finish line, racers will be greeted by a 15-member Oompa Band, a beer garden, bräts, hot dogs, a root beer garden just for the kids, smoothie and fruit samples and even a Water Weenie Race that you may have to see to believe.
Supported by more than 20 local businesses, the Burien Brät Trot 5K Race and Relay promises a professional run, tremendous fun and the incredible combined "feel-good" of exercising while doing something truly impactful within your own community, keeping local children safer.
This event is presented by Dan the Sausageman and the Tin Room to support local efforts to improve car seat safety.
With the generous support of more than 25 local business community sponsors including Lake Burien Physical Therapy, Advanced Massage and the Kenner Dental Group, the race already promises great things. For a complete list of sponsors, and a great video about Bret the Brat, please visit www.burienbrattrot.com and then visit these businesses that believe in supporting this event.
The Award Ceremony for the top Overall Winners in the Male and Female categories will take place on October 10 at the Highline Schools for Excellence Foundation Oktoberfest Dinner and Auction.
Why car seats?
Car crashes are the #1 killer of children age 2-12 in South King County.
Properly fitted and installed child restraint systems are critical to ensuring that the smallest among us are protected during the impact of a fender bender or a crash.
Safe Kids offers car seat fitting stations as over 90 percent of all car seats inspected are improperly installed diminishing their effectiveness during an accident. Safe Kids also provides education and support to other community efforts to provide safe seats to local children through its Pass-It/Toss-It Program supporting the reuse and recycling of used seats.
WestSide Baby provides gently used seats to children in need in this community. With extra inspections, trainings and support, 25 used seats pass into hands of children in poverty right in King County each month.
Unfortunately, due to limited resources, more than 35 requests for seats are made that are not filled. This places already vulnerable children at greater risk of injury placing extra emotional and financial health care burdens on families with numerous barriers to success already.
Why run in the Burien Brat Trot 5K?
All net proceeds from this race will directly support Safe Kids South King County's efforts to improve the odds stacked against children in cars and WestSide Baby's programs to provide this essential safety item to local children in need. It will also be an extraordinarily fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Olde Burien.
Great exercise, family friendly fun and that all day feel good feeling you get from doing something to support another.
