Lillian Marguez of Foster goes flying over Evergreen goalie Taylor Frese.
Foster took on Evergreen in girls soccer and it wasn’t close as the Bulldogs bit the Wolverines seven times in 90 minutes --with a final game score of 7-0 on the lovely Field Turf grass at Foster High School Thursday.
So the Bulldogs earned their first league win this Seamount League season to go 1-4-0 while the Wolverines dropped to 0-2.
“This was a good game for us,” said Foster girls coach Heather Deleza. “The season started a little rough. We played the toughest teams first on the schedule.”
And that’s putting it mildly, that is, “a little rough.”
The Bulldogs lost their first four games by a combined goals for/against of 34-0.
But this game was a welcome change of pace and certainly the score swung the completely opposite direction.
Starting off finding the net for the purple and white clad young ladies was freshman player Marily Hernandez, striking in a shot just four minutes in.
The score remained the same for the next 16 minutes even with the ball never crossing into the Foster side of the field in that time. Almost scoring was sophomore Lizbeth Hernandez on a long shot 10 minutes into the match before Nataly Sanchez scored with 20 minutes remaining in the first half, getting a foot on a loose ball inside the 6-yard box amid a bevy of girls trying to kick it away or in the net.
Hernandez looked like she was destined for a hat trick (three goals scored in one game) with her next shot, a net-getter nine minutes after Sanchez scored goal No. 2 for the Bulldogs.
First it was Lizbeth Hernandez barreling with the soccer ball down the right sideline on a breakaway before crossing into the middle beautifully for a ball that Marily Hernandez hit perfectly into the net to make it 3-0.
The fourth goal of the first half came for the Bulldogs with five minutes remaining on the clock. Lizbeth Hernandez made a direct free kick from the top of the 18-yard box, nicely placing the ball to the right upper vee area to make it 4-0.
Keep in mind this team is young as Lizbeth is, as noted, a sophomore, and Marily Hernandez is a freshman and Sanchez is a sophomore, too.
“We graduated four last year,” said Deleza, noting things go in cycles. “We only have two seniors this year.”
Moving on, for the fifth goal of the game, it was junior Savannah Romero netting it.
Then it was senior Diana Jimenez getting in on the act as she scored No. 6 and then No. 7 came from fellow senior Bailey Norton, who made a few shots in this game that were close to going in. Finally, a shot she took found its home.
This was a good win for Foster. Not only did it stop the Bulldogs’ winless ways, it helped them get a little oomph in the psyche department, too.
“I think it built the girls confidence up,” said Deleza. “And hopefully we will continue to grow from this game.”
