Police Blotter week of 10.26.09: Soft landing
Mon, 10/26/2009
Officers feel that freshly applied beauty bark, softened by the rain, was the saving grace in High Point last week when two small children fell from a third-floor window of a residence. They landed in the landscaping but suffered no apparent broken bones or head injuries according to medics on scene. The children were transported to Harborview for further evaluation.
An Admiral resident driving westbound on the West Seattle Freeway made the mistake of passing an officer at 78 miles per hour. (The officer generously noted that the driver “slowed down to 75” as he took the Admiral Way exit.) He provided an out-of-state license (though he's lived here for the past year) and an expired insurance card. And it turns out that the Arizona license had been suspended. He was cited for speeding, no proof of insurance, and driving on a suspended license—for which his vehicle was impounded.
A shoplifter at the Morgan Thriftway ran from store security, knocking a mother and child to the floor and damaging the store's doors before managing to escape. He had been caught hiding packages of rib-eye steaks beneath his jacket.
Perhaps he was planning to rendezvous with the woman who was caught shoplifting eight bottles of wine from the Westwood QFC.
When a 35th Avenue store employee went outside for a moment on Thursday evening, he noticed some teens acting suspiciously—and one was holding a knife. Concerned, he grabbed a phone, called 911, and remained outside in his car. When the teens—now wearing clothing pulled over their faces—approached the store entrance, he made gestures and showed them the phone. The teens ran away but were spotted by a witness who estimated their ages as 16-17. About 15 minutes later, a Highland Park deli was robbed by three people matching this description (though a small handgun—not a knife—was displayed). The suspects remain at large.
Around 8 p.m. Saturday, in the 6700 block of 35th Avenue Southwest, two citizens reported being hit by BB pellets shot from a passing car—a dark blue or black Honda or Toyota sedan.
Thursday night a woman was standing in front of the Junction QFC when two men snatched her purse and tried (unsuccessfully) to grab her Blackberry from her hands.
Pricey craving: Officers were called to a South Park convenience store to trespass an intoxicated customer who wanted sunflower seeds but couldn't pay for them. Turned out the man was wanted on a $5,000 harassment warrant. He was promptly booked into King County Jail.
The intoxicated South Park man claimed he had been robbed in the 1200 block of South Cloverdale early Wednesday. Although he claimed to know where the suspects lived, officers didn't make any arrests, considering that his description of the suspect car changed from green, to blue, to red (the victim then said he was color blind), he couldn't tell officers his own address, and that before calling 911 he had gone home for a few more beers.
