Pinson breaks record, team takes berth

For Thomas Jefferson it was a game to forget, but for Federal Way it was a game to remember for a long time.
It won't be because of the 69-21score. It will be because of the playoff berth that the Eagles cemented, and for an individual feat that goes down in South Puget Sound League history.
Federal Way senior Trenton Pinson provided a dazzling highlight with an SPSL record seven touchdowns to lead the way in the win.
With a postseason ticket in hand, the Eagles go to Gig Harbor for a 7 p.m. playoff against the Tides Tuesday, Nov. 3. The mini playoff takes the winner to Vancouver to play the Greater St. Helens No. 1 team the following weekend.
"It was over early, and it was a chance for a good rest for the starters for Tuesday," said Federal Way head coach John Meagher after the Thursday, Oct. 29 action at Federal Way Memorial Field. "It was nice to get ahead early and put some players on the sidelines."
It was also a chance to make upcoming opponents shake in their boots, considering the 42-0 score the Eagles amassed in the first quarter.
Pinson started it all off, running 56 yards down the left side of the field for a touchdown with only 37 seconds ticked off the game clock. UCLA-bound soccer player Kelyn Rowe then booted the extra point and the Eagles were on their way at 7-0.
A fumble gave Federal Way the ball back after only two plays and Pinson struck on a 1-yard run up the middle four plays after that.
Quarterback Nick Tanielu ran for a two-point conversion to make it 15-0 with 8:51 to go in the quarter.
Lightning struck even quicker the next time, as the Eagles pounced on a TJ fumble only 16 yards from the end zone. This time Pinson ran the ball in from the 16 on the first play of the possession. A run for two points failed to leave the score at 21-0 with 8:02 left in the quarter.
Rowe scored the next touchdown by himself on a fake punt, slicing down the left sideline on a 28-yard play. Rowe split the uprights with his conversion kick and it was now 28-0 with 4:46 to go.
The next touchdown call went to Pinson again and he scored on a 9-yard run, then Rowe did his job again to make it 35-0 with 2:48 left in the quarter.
The final touchdown of the quarter came with only 10.7 seconds left, this time on the defensive side.
Isiah Umipig picked off a pass and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown. Rowe made yet another kick to make it 42-0.
Pinson scored with 10:42 left in the second quarter on an 8-yard run, fielding a pitch from Tanielu on the left side and cutting back to the right. Rowe was on target again after the touchdown, as he was after a 6-yard touchdown run by Pinson at 7:23 that made it 56-0.
The Eagles made it 63-0 at the 5:22 mark, with a 78-yard run by Umipig setting up a 4-yard run by Pinson.
TJ finally found daylight with 57.3 seconds left in the first half. KW Williams passed to Scott Sanford for an 18-yard touchdown. McKay Owsley kicked the extra point and the Raiders were on the board, but still trailing, 63-7.
The second half was sped up by a "running clock" rule for sake of Thomas Jefferson, but it was the Raiders who tacked on two touchdowns -- one on a 49-yard run by Michael Sallee and the other on a 16-yard tipped ball recovery by Sanford. Owsley's kicks gave the Raiders a total of 21 points.
Federal Way, meanwhile, scored with 11:13 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Havili. A drop kick attempt for the extra point missed to leave the Eagles' final total at 69 points.
