Gertrud C. "Trudi" Smith

Passed away Tuesday, September 12th at Providence Mount St. Vincent. She is survived by her son Paul, daughter-in-law Daris, and granddaughters Jessika and Jennifer (Carlos). Gertrud was born March 5,1921 in Graz, Austria the only child of Fredrich and Christine Lang. The family moved to Linz, Austria where her electrical engineer father opened an electrical design and parts shop. Trudi was the bookkeeper for the family business. She was an avid skier and tennis player and met her future husband, Herbert Smith, on a tennis court. The couple were engaged in 1954 and married in 1955. The newlyweds then settled in West Seattle were Herb's parents, John and Bella Smith, lived. Herb accepted a teaching position in London, England and the couple moved there in June 1957. Their only child Paul was born in London, September 1957. The couple returned to West Seattle in 1958 and Trudi devoted her time to running the household, raising their son, and adjusting to life in America. Trudi became active in various West Seattle social and charitable organizations where she could put her many creative talents to good use. She traveled back to Austria regularly to visit family and friends, often accompanied by her husband and son. Trudi was a devoted grandmother and took great pride in helping to raise her granddaughters. Trudi was renowned for her culinary and knitting skills. Her cookies, Weiner Schnitzel, and beautiful knitted sweaters that she gave as gifts will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. There will be a Memorial Ceremony at Providence Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, 23rd of September at 11 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home of West Seattle.
