Police Blotter week of 1-11-10

On Fauntleroy SW, a man was surprised to discover his electric bill increased by $170 in a month's time. Then he noticed a extension cord running from one of his patio outlets to a neighboring home. A man doing maintenance work at that home was booked into King County Jail after admitting that he was the culprit.
An 18-year-old woman, well-known to emergency personnel in the Admiral area and to mental health professionals at Harborview, called 911 31 times on Sunday the 5th, yelling obscenities and threatening the operators. Officers arrived and told her, once again, that she should call 911 only in case of emergency. (In the past several months she has made hundreds of calls, claiming to be suicidal.) She swore and said she'd call whenever she wanted and that she'd file a complaint if no one showed up. Considering her history of false reporting and defiance, she was arrested and booked into King County Jail for possible treatment in mental health court.
Just after midnight in the High Point area, an officer contacted a driver whose headlights were off while driving down 35th. The officer could smell alcohol and performed sobriety tests on the driver, who actually passed the exam. However, a records check showed that the man was driving with a suspended license and was supposed to have an ignition interlock device (which prevents an intoxicated driver from starting the car) on his vehicle—but did not. The local resident was booked into King County Jail for the violations.
A Westwood Village bank employee became suspicious when an elderly customer returned to the bank to exchange a $10,000 check because he “needed cash instead.” A few questions proved that the man had been caught up in a pigeon-drop scheme and was about the turn the money over to strangers. The teller called 911, but the suspects had left the parking lot by the time officers arrived. Because of his advanced age, the victim's description of the suspects was minimal—only that they were a black male and black female, aged 50-64.
The clerk at a local 7-11 called 911 to report a suspicious customer—a man who had purchased over $1,000 worth of items with a credit card but had no ID other than a passport. The man—a north Seattle resident—seemed to have some signs of mental illness, and told officers he was buying wedding gifts (the bride will surely appreciate the adult magazines the man included). He claimed his wallet had been stolen in Bangkok and that his wife was divorcing him because he was spending his children's education funds. He denied having medical issues and declined to speak with mental health professionals. Officers removed him from the store at the clerk's request.
Early Tuesday, the 5th, officers were called to a Highland Park home where residents reported a young woman knocking on their door saying she'd been raped and assaulted. The 19-year-old victim stated that after drinking some beers with men in Westcrest Park she was held down by the neck (officers could see bruising) and raped while being slapped repeatedly in the face. The men later walked her to a friend's home and threatened to kill her before she was able to escape. She was transported to Harborview for treatment.
According to officers who did a welfare check, a 90-year-old Highland Park woman who recently lost her son is unable to care for herself. (She called 911 for help defrosting her refrigerator.) Noting that she is “extremely lonely and depressed, nearly deaf, and with limited food,” the officers write that she is unable to attend doctor appointments or get prescriptions. She says she contacted Catholic Services for assistance but reports there was no followup. The officers called some local agencies but got only voice mail, and request that someone look into the situation. (And yes, they did defrost her fridge.)
