Reed Hutchinson plays 12 instruments and is a completely self taught musician. He has just completed a rock opera that blends all his musical influences into a set of 34 songs and a story. His dream is to take the final product to Broadway.
Reed Hutchinson is someone who lives through his art. He's a very well respected hair stylist and he's a self taught musician (he plays guitar, piano and a variety of other instruments) that's been called the "next big thing" to come from Seattle.
He trained as a hair stylist with Gene Juarez Salons (known under the name Reed Alan) and has worked in that field in both Seattle and Los Angeles. He's been in many bands including the well known local band Feast and his own band called simply Reed.
His most recent brush with fame came through his agent who arranged to have him sing the theme song for a Fox Television show called Kitchen Confidential. He got interested in music around the age of 12 when he heard Ozzy Osbourne being played at scout camp. That set the course for a big part of Reed's life.
Today he works at the Elliott Salon just off Beach Drive and said that he wants to continue to serve his very loyal clients.
But Reed has higher aspirations. He wants to go to Broadway.
He has been taking a break from performing and has recently completed work on a rock opera he calls "Making It", comprised of 34 songs that in his own description sound as "if Queen, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin met The Killers and U2 and then bumped into Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt...and said...let's Rock!"
The music he's produced thus far with his most recent band is a hybrid of rock, pop and classical often incorporating cellos, violins, pianos, guitars in a mix that has hints of the past but blended in a new way.
Rather than describe the plot of his opera he describes it this way; "I think it's a very timeless theme and I've actually considered doing it back in Mozart's time with wigs and all the trimmings. Going to Vienna instead of a current American story of going to Hollywood."
If anyone can achieve such a lofty goal, it seems likely it would be someone with the boundless talent of Reed Hutchinson.
