Todd Beamer grabs second in standings

Fans, including University of Washington head basketball coach Lorenzo Romar, had their eyes on the 6-foot-8 Todd Beamer big show, Kevin Davis, on Saturday.
Davis came through with a solid performance, but an unsung teammate took the big spotlight on Saturday at Beamer High School.
Titan guard Napa Mefi converted 5-of-6 three-pointers on the way to a season high 31 points to fire Todd Beamer to a 75-62 South Puget Sound League boys basketball victory against Puyallup in an encounter of teams tied for second place in the South Division.
The point total was a complete surprise to Mefi.
"Really ? Wow," Mefi exclaimed. "It didn't feel like it. I was just working hard to get open. My teammates found me with some good passes. Our team didn't come out flat at the start of the game like we sometimes do."
Beamer holds solo second place in the SPSL 4A South at 11-3 (13-5 overall) behind Curtis (13-1). Currently, Decatur stands at 11-4 with Puyallup's record being 10-4. The Titans can clinch second place by winning their last two games. When Beamer visits Decatur on Tuesday, February 2, the Gators could still throw the second place battle into a scramble with a defeat of the Titans.
"It was a fun night," said Beamer coach Brent Brilhante. "We just wanted to attack the rim and get Kevin the ball. He shows up every night to play. I know Kevin wants the ball every time down, but when there's three guys (guarding him), it's hard to get him the ball."
Brilhante also analyzed the breakout game of Mefi.
"We've been waiting for him to come alive," he said. "He is averaging 15 points a game, but he's not been shooting a very good percentage. He hit some big shots for us last year, and it would be nice if his shooting came around. We're hoping that starts tonight."
In the case of Davis, he began the contest with a one-handed stuff shot off a lob pass from Mefi before finishing the game with 21 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.
First quarter action exhibited Davis scoring 13 of his first half 17 points as Beamer erased a 14-9 deficit to trail only 23-22 at halftime. Although Davis's intimidating presence in the paint forced Puyallup players to modify their normal short-range shots or change plans completely, the Vikings were red-hot from the outside with five three-point goals.
Rebuffing the early storm of Puyallup (13-5 overall), Todd Beamer broke away from a 32-31 Titan edge to move away to a 40-31 margin, capped by a Mefi steal and driving lay in. Flooring the accelerator almost without ceasing, Beamer drove away with a 10-5 run for a 50-36 halftime command. Mefi scored his team's final seven points of the second quarter.
In the second half, the Vikings placed defenders in front and back of Davis, occasionally sliding a third defender to his side. Puyallup's big weapon was the three-point goal. Despite canning four three-point goals for the game, the Vikings opened the third quarter cold from the field. As the three-point goals went away, so did Puyallup. Beamer built up the dominance to 16 points twice, including 58-42 on a Mefi three-point bomb.
"They didn't keep them (double and triple teams) on me all the time (like Rogers did on Thursday)," Davis observed while standing in the hallway after the game. "We broke their press better this time."
In regards to wanting to win all the games, the Titan's response to an assistant coach asking if Davis wanted a cupcake tells it all.
"Yeah, I'll take them all," he said.
With 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Erin Barber's three-point goal brought the Vikings within 60-54. At this point, the Titans regained their momentum to re-establish and keep double-digit leads until the end. Mefi motored for 10 of the Titans' 14 fourth quarter points. The Vikings were simply unable to stop the Beamer offense regularly.
"We were just moving the ball and making our shots," concluded Mefi. "That was the big difference (from a previous 20-point loss at Puyallup)."
Terelle Loggins added 11 points for Todd Beamer.
Jay Balmer torched six three-pointers en route to 18 Puyallup points. Erin Barber drained three-shots from three-point land and finished with 17 points.
