Reverend removed from ministry by Vatican
Vatican officials have permanently barred from active ministry a priest who served in three Western Washington parishes and taught at a high school. The Rev. Dennis Kemp was most recently pastor at St. Monica Catholic Church on Mercer Island. He was placed on administrative leave in 2007 after being accused of inappropriate contact with a 12-year-old boy.
Mercer Island police investigated and turned their findings over to the King County prosecutor's office. Prosecutors decided there was insufficient evidence to file criminal charges. The archdiocese review board unanimously recommended Kemp be barred from active ministry. Seattle Archbishop Alex Brunett says the Vatican has agreed.
In a letter to St. Monica parishioners, the archbishop says Kemp appealed but the appeal was denied. The 63-year-old priest was not immediately reachable for comment. He also served at St. Mark Church in Shoreline and at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Bremerton, and as a campus minister and teacher at Kennedy High School in Burien.
Five years for child pornography
A Seattle man who was arrested at SeaTac Airport when his computer was found to have child porn on it was sentenced to five years in federal prison. Joshua Kennedy was arrested in August of 2007 when a customs agent saw images of child porn on Kennedy's laptop computer as he returned from a trip from Panama.
Kennedy was convicted in November. It was revealed during the trial that Kennedy had visited a child porn site over 40 times in the two years he owned the laptop and tried to erase the illegal images from the computer before he returned from Panama. Prosecutors had wanted a seven-year sentence for Kennedy. But Kennedy will also have 15 years of supervised release on top of his five years in prison and he will have to register as a sex offender.
He will also have to receive sex offender and drug treatment while in prison.
