Charges filed in crash that left man paralyzed
Mugiraneza Vianne has been charged with vehicular assault after his vehicle left the roadway and struck Patrick Franklin, who was fueling a car on the shoulder of Interstate 5 just north of South 200th Street in SeaTac. Vianne struck Franklin, who was thrown to the front of his car, and then Vianne pulled over further down the shoulder. Franklin sustained serious injuries and his doctor said he is most likely paralyzed. Witnesses told Washington State Patrol that Vianne was on his cell phone at the time of the collision.
According to documents, when a trooper questioned Vianne at the scene he said he thought he struck the vehicle's mirror, but did not hit a person. He was asked if he was on his phone at the time of the collision, Vianne said no. The trooper looked at Vianne's phone and records showed there was a call at the time of the collision. The trooper also said Vianne was exhibiting signs of impairment, documents said.
Blood was drawn from Vianne and WSP is awaiting toxicology tests from those samples. Franklin's family said he has a broken neck, broken legs and internal injuries. Vianne is scheduled to be arraigned on April 12.
Two injured when car smashes into tree
A man and woman are recovering after their car went airborne off Ambaum Boulevard Southwest near Southwest 116th Street in Burien.
Deputies said the car hit a jersey barrier at a high speed and launched in the air high enough to clear a street sign, and flew 150 feet before slamming into a tree. The car then crashed to the ground, bringing down power lines. The car's hood ended up in a tree, about 25 feet off the ground. King County Sheriff's Sgt. Calvin Beringer said that a man in his 50s was driving with a woman in her mid-40s as a passenger.
Firefighters had to rescue one person from the car. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center where their conditions are not known. Investigators suspect alcohol played a role in the crash.
Four rescued from capsized boat
Emergency dispatchers from South King County Fire and Rescue said someone on the Des Moines beach called 911 to report a boat accident. Fire and Rescue arrived. They found two men and two women clinging to the hull after their 25-foot boat flipped. They were all wearing life jackets and said they were having a problem with the boat's drain plug, and that caused the vessel to fill up with water.
The boat was towed into shore. The four were treated for mild hypothermia at the scene and released.
Bone found in dirt
Police were called to a Burien home for a report of a possible bone found. The homeowner had responded to a Craigslist ad of dirt for sale about one month ago. This was the first time they had ordered dirt off of Craigslist. Officers located a suspicious deteriorated bone in the delivered pile of dirt. It will be sent off to determine what type of bone it is.
