Passed away August 20, 2007 at age 89 after a long struggle with emphysema and most recently lung cancer. Born on St. Valentine's Day in 1918, Nita grew up in Seattle and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936.
Before getting married, she worked at Woolworths and the Coon Chicken Inn. She married Leonard Dugan in 1941 and was the mother of three daughters. In her early years, she enjoyed gardening, bowling, knitting, making doll clothes and playing the piano. In her latter years, her favorite things to do were crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, watching Wheel of Fortune and reruns of Lawrence Welk, going out for coffee and to the movies, weekly breakfasts at the Charlestown Cafホ and weekly lunches at the Morgan Thriftway. She began attending Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in 1976.
Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her sister Garnet Smith and her brother Winston Johnson. She is survived by her sister Maxine Zobrist of Oregon, brother Woodrow Johnson of Utah, daughters Sandy Burns, Shelley Boogaard (Rick), and Shawne Lang (Paul) of West Seattle, five grandchildren; Cody Burns, Brady Burns, Stacey Stolie, Shayla Keith (Jim), Hilary Nelson (Erik), and one great grandchild, Fallon Keith.
She remained young at heart to the very end and was a very loving mother and grandmother. All of her family and friends will greatly miss her and cherish the memories she leaves behind. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 11:00am at Hillcrest Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The American Lung Association.
