Things can change quickly.
Not only was that the case when rain struck the Federal Way High School baseball field after the final out was made Tuesday, but the Eagles suddenly changed a 6-2 deficit behind Thomas Jefferson to a 9-6 victory with a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning.
Austin Weber then finished off the Raiders by striking out the side in the top of the third.
Federal Way improved to 8-4 in South Puget Sound League North Division action with the unexpected win as TJ fell to 7-5.
"It's been awhile since we beat those guys," said Eagles head coach Danny Graham of the Raiders. "They're a great team."
On the other hand it was a frustrating loss for TJ.
"We just let it get away," said Jefferson assistant coach Greg Campbell.
It looked like the Raiders would be the team that would run away with the day in the top of the first inning.
Travis Quackenbush was hit by a pitch and Harold Adams launched a two-run home run.
Federal Way answered in kind with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Drew Cratsenberg hit into an error and Nick Tonielu walked before Elliott Morris singled in Cratsenberg and Brett Evans launched a sacrifice fly to bring in Tonielu.
TJ took the lead again as Mitch McQueen launched a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the second.
The Raiders tacked on one more in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 6-2 lead.
Adams walked and scored as Brigham doubled down the left-field line in the fourth.
Oakley Murphy and Dylan Cooper walked to start off the fifth and both scored as McQueen ripped a two-run single to left.
Three straight hit Federal Way batters failed to pay off in a run in the bottom of the fifth as the Raiders turned a second-to-short-to-first double play.
But the TJ heroics went for naught in the bottom of the sixth.
Elliott Morris singled to spark the seven run rally and Evans walked. A throw on an out attempt at first went into the Raiders' dugout to put runners on second and third.
Designated hitter Darin Moran singled in Morris and moved Evans to third and T.J. Horsfall of the Eagles singled in Evans and moved Moran to second.
Cratsenberg then cracked a double to deep left center to bring in both runners and Tonielu doubled in Cratsenberg. Weber and Morris followed with back-to-back singles to tally two more.
Weber, who relieved starter Horsfall in the fifth inning, bore down to strike out three in a row in the seventh and sealed the Eagles' win.
Weber and Horsfall struck out five total batters each. TJ's Brigham struck out only one but allowed only one earned run out of two scored in five full innings of work.
Brigham also hit 3-for-4 and McQueen hit 2-for-3.
For Federal Way, Morris hit 3-for-3 on singles and Weber hit 2-for-4.
