Fire Department Ready to Host Scouts
Wed, 04/21/2010
South King Fire and Rescue will host its annual Fire Station Night for Scouts on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Headquarters Fire Station, located at 31617 1st Avenue South in Federal Way.
South King provides fire service for Des Moines, Federal Way and some unincorporated areas.
"This is a great time for scouts of all ages to learn about what happens at a fire station," said Gordie Olson, South King Fire & Rescue's Fire Marshal. "It's a fun-filled event that we've hosted for the several years."
Scouts can purchase a custom fit bike helmet for $7, see the Federal Way Police Department's SWAT Team and Bomb Unit Robot, and parents can get a child ID. Guests will also be able to escape from a smoke-filled house, try on firefighting gear, climb aboard the fire engine and even munch a hot dog or two served by the firefighters. Scout leaders are encouraged to bring their cameras, as there may be some great photo opportunities.
Highlights of the evening are sure to be the vehicle extrication demonstration and a high angle rope rescue presentation. Firefighters will demonstrate how they are able to efficiently rescue people at high angles and extricate trapped patients from vehicle collisions.
Presentations will be at 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 pm. The Pierce County Pipes and Drums, which includes firefighters from several agencies, will also be featured. Other activities include Seattle Fire Department's Henny the Arson Dog, Airlift Northwest Helicopter (weather permitting) and South King Fire's Special Operations Teams.
South King Fire and Rescue started Fire Station Nite as a way to provide a station tour to scouting groups interested in learning more about what firefighters do.
This year, more than 500 scouts and adults are expected to attend. All scout troops are invited to attend. For more information, contact Donna Conner at the Fire Department at 253-946-7246.
