Two turned into a troublesome number for Todd Beamer on Thursday, May 13, at the South Puget Sound League 4A fastpitch softball tournament.
With their offense held in check most of the day, the Titans suffered two consecutive losses by identical scores of 6-2 at the Service Club ballfields.
"Our bats got cold at the wrong time," said Titans head coach Dave Abrahamson. "The team has been slumping, but we'll be all right tomorrow."
Morning brought forth the challenge of the Kentridge Chargers. The visiting Titans jumped ahead in the first inning with a run, but the Chargers responded with two home half runs to take the lead.
TB tied the score at 2-2 in the third, but Kentridge posted two runs in the fourth inning with an additional pair in the fifth and finished with 10 hits.
Sarah Petosa batted 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Emma Blauser was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
The right-handed Blauser, with the help of her defense, pitched four consecutive shutout innings following the rugged first.
In the early evening clash, Beamer was embroiled in a close ballgame, trailing only 3-2 after five innings of play before sixth inning defensive lapses opened the gates for a trio of Kentwood runs.
The silence of the Titan bats in the late innings provided the final doom of defeat.
Rallying back after the visiting Conquerors struck for three first inning runs, the Titans settled down and started piecing together a comeback with a tally in their initial at bat.
Sarah Petosa led off with an infield single and stole second base on the first pitch to Blauser. Blauser grounded out to first base to advance Pelosa to third base.
After a groundout to third failed to send Petosa home, Brianna Grosche singled in the run.
In the third inning, Petosa singled through the middle from the leadoff spot. Blauser responded with a bunt for a base hit, but the next batter struck out swinging. Grosche grounded out to shortstop for Beamer's final run of the game.
Petosa led the Titan batters on a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored.
