State tourney begins for Federal Way area soccer teams

An unexpected win and an unexpected loss occurred at Federal Way Memorial Field Tuesday.
Federal Way rose up to knock off Snohomish, 3-2, in the first game of a state soccer tournament opening double-header and perennially tough Thomas Jefferson then played Marysville-Pilchuck in the second game and lost it, 4-3. The Raiders' match was settled by the Tomahawks winning a five-round penalty kick shootout, 3-1.
Federal Way advances to play crosstown rival Todd Beamer -- a 3-2 winner in a road opener against Evergreen of Vancouver -- in a 1:30 p.m. match Saturday at Federal Way Memorial. TJ bowed out of the tournament with the loss.
TJ head coach Dave Hanson was still impressed by the way his team played.
"That was a good game," he emphasized.
Federal Way kept trading goals with Snohomish, too, to keep its onlookers alert.
The Eagles struck first with 24:07 remaining in the first half, with Brad Lewis sliding in on a follow-up shot.
Spencer Helfrich answered for Snohomish with a goal at 34:34 to play in the second half before Federal Way's Kelyn Rowe scored from up close with 17:16 remaining for a 2-1 lead. Rowe, who has signed with UCLA for next year, knocked the ball into the top right portion of the net past the diving goalie.
Then it was the Panthers' turn again, with Brendon Gundry scoring from 40 yards out to knot the score back up again at 16:06 left to play.
Even though time was running down and the match was still wide open, Colin Kim scored what turned out to be the winning goal with 4:16 remaining.
Once the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Federal Way players met in celebration before taking their cheers and waves to their fans on the other side of the stadium.
The Jefferson match was tied four times in regulation time -- at 0-0, 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3.
TJ scored the first goal on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called in the penalty box. Chase Hanson -- the coach's son -- scored it with 33:22 left in the first half with a shot that went right as the goalie went left.
The Raiders also scored Marysville-Pilchuck's first goal on a shot that went in on the bounce off TJ's William Sims.
The Tomahawks struck again with a goal by Brady Ballew at the 28:52 mark to make it 2-1 in their favor, before the Raiders tied it again at 2-2 with 22:16 left on a throw-in and ensuing score by Jim Oganga.
Oganga scored again with 26:00 left in the second half with a well-placed goal into the net to make it 3-2.
But Jesus Valenzuela shocked the Raiders and their faithful by drilling the ball in with only 3:01 to play in regulation.
The tie held through what little time was left and sent the match into two five-minute overtime periods. A "golden" goal by either team would have settled it at that point, but the score stood until the clock went back to 0:00.
That brought the match down to a "shootout" to settle things.
Keir Torkorla of Marysville-Pilchuck took the first penalty kick shot, and ran a fully 35yards up to the net before hitting the upper right side of the net.
The Raiders answered with Casey Kim scoring on a shot under the crossbar to make it 1-1, but that was the last goal they could muster.
Valenzuela then drilled in the Tomahawks' second shot for a 2-1 lead, and Marysville-Pilchuck goalie Kyle Bluhm won it to start the fifth round with a goal of his own up the middle.
TJ goalie Adam Duke, a junior, also had a good match to help bring the match down to the wire.
The Raiders now turn their eyes to next year, when they expect to be tough again.
"We're real young," said coach Hanson. "We only have five seniors on the roster and only three were on the field."
As for Beamer, Troy Peterson scored two goals and Ian Lange one in a victory over host Evergreen in Vancouver.
