Police Blotter: When a safe isn't so safe

Noon Jan. 1 – 8 a.m. June 14, 2300 N.W. 99th St.
The last time the victim checked inside his safe thoroughly was approximately Jan. 1, 2010. On June 14, he learned that someone had stolen his pistol and $5,000 from the safe that was kept downstairs in his house.
The key to the safe was kept on top of the safe for easy access.
The vicim does not know what happened, but there had been times when his back door was left wide open in the morning and there have been frequent break-ins to cars parked outside.
8 a.m. June 12 – 6 p.m. June 13, 4600 Block of Greenwood Ave. N.
Victim believes an unknown person was inside his residence between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Victim is not sure what date the incident occurred but thinks it was either June 12 or June 13.
The unknown person gained entry through a street-level bedroom window. According to the homeowner, he thinks he left the window open.
A few electronic items and some loose change were taken.
9:04 p.m. June 13 – 9:04 p.m. June 14, 500 Block of N. 85th St.
The complainant stated that her vehicle was vandalized sometime during the night and she wanted to report items missing from it.
Complainant stated that she parked her vehicle, a 1996 Volvo, in the apartment complex's secure parking garage at an unknown time during the night. She stated that when she returned to her vehicle the following afternoon, she noticed that the passenger-side rear window was broken.
Complainant stated that after inspecting her vehicle, she noticed that someone threw a fire extinguisher through the passenger-side rear window and stole her insurance information as well as the garage door opener for the apartment complex.
Complainant stated that she has no idea who could have vandalized her vehicle, as she recently moved into the apartment complex and it is secure parking. She stated that she looked on every floor of the apartment complex and noticed that a fire extinguisher was missing from the second floor.
Officer inspected the vehicle and noticed that there were numerous items of value sitting in plain view. Officer dusted the fire extinguisher for latent prints and located several prints of usable value before returning the fire extinguisher to the apartment complex.
1 a.m. June 16 – 4:50 p.m. June 16, 1500 Block of N.W. Market St.
An unknown suspect entered the secure parking garage by unknown means and stole the victim's 1996 Subaru.
The suspect placed several items from inside the vehicle on the ground. Officer made a fingerprint search of the items but did not locate any usable prints.
9:30 a.m. June 16 – 6:15 p.m. June 16, 6200 Block of First Ave. N.W.
Complainant called 911 to report a forced-entry burglary to his residence. Victim told police he left for work at approximately 9:15 a.m. and all doors to his house were secure. When he returned home, he discovered the back basement door to his house had been kicked in and was wide open.
Victim went through and checked the house to see what was missing. He discovered a laptop and iPod were missing from the front room. Missing from upstairs bedroom was a rollaway suitcase, iPod boombox accessory and a jar with about $50 in change. Vicim stated his yellow gold wedding band was missing from his bedroom drawer.
Victim's home is a three-story house. The door that was damaged was on the lower floor. On the basement level, a number of doors were left open. Vicim was unsure if anything had been taken from those rooms.
The doorway to the main floor was closed, but the victim pointed out his dog Jack has access to the main floor and would have been barking at the door at that time. Vicim then showed me an empty glass jar that according to him had been full of Milk-Bone treats for Jack.
From the main floor there is access to third floor bedroom. One of the drawers to dresser was opened, and the box for his wedding band was thrown on the floor.
1 a.m. June 16 – 8:30 a.m. June 16, 1500 Block of N.W. Market St.
The victim's vehicle's tires and stereo were taken. The vehicle was parked in the secured parking garage of the victim's apartment building.
The suspect popped out the whole driver door window to enter. The suspect used a jack and spare tire to keep the vehicle off the ground. No other vehicle in the garage was touched.
It was a very clean job. There were no fingerprints found. No one was seen or heard.
