No third SeaTac trial
The King County prosecutors announced July 9 they will not seek a third trial for former sheriff's Deputy Paul Schene on assault charges. Two juries were not able to come to a unanimous verdict in earlier trials. Schene, who was fired as a deputy, had been charged with assaulting a teenage girl at the police precinct behind SeaTac City Hall.
Man barely survives festivities
A July 4th explosion of homemade fireworks sent a SeaTac man to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries. He had tied together several sparklers and secured them in a concrete block. When the fireworks were detonated, the block flew apart, one fragment hitting him in the head and causing life-threatening injuries. Other fragments his the garage door and a nearby car. Deputies continue to investigate the situation.
Unlawful airport visit
Passengers restrained a man who entered the Sea-Tac Airport jetway through a security exit, where arriving passengers usually exit. He attempted to flee through an outside exit gate, but was prevented from doing so. Officials report that he is currently undergoing mental evaluations.
SeaTac fire
An apartment complex fire that began in an unoccupied unit displaced four SeaTac residents. The SeaTac Fire Department responded to the fire, and local Red Cross volunteers provided aid to the residents.
Troublesome customer reported
The front desk manager of a restaurant and hotel on International Boulevard called 911 after staff and customers complained that a female customer was yelling irrational comments to other patrons while sitting in the restaurant. When staff members asked her to leave, she refused.
Theft at local church
A Burien church reported that several gift cards had been stolen from the church safe during a service. The safe was locked at the time of the theft, but several members of the congregation knew the combination.
Jukebox robbery
The owner of a business located on Ambaum Boulevard South reported to police that he had found a glass plate in the business' rear door shattered when he arrived at work. The unknown suspect had broken the glass with a rock. Upon entering the building, he stole only the money in an electric jukebox.
Mail rudely dispersed
A resident of the 16000 block of 7th Avenue South told police that an unknown suspect had removed her mail from her mailbox and thrown it into nearby bushes. A neighbor later found the mail and placed it on the victim's porch. Several envelopes had been torn, but none were missing.
