Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza update
Mon, 07/12/2010
Libby Carr, speaking on behalf of the Alki Community Council and more specifically for the Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza has shared this update on the status of the plaza and the bricks that remain available for sale.
Her update follows:
In October of 2009, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Seattle Parks & Recreation and the Alki Community Council designating the Council as the local organization responsible for the Plaza and granting it the right to sell additional engraved bricks and bronze Tribute Plaques. As specified in this agreement, funds raised by this sale have been turned over to Parks and will be placed in a separate account to be used to supplement the original Phase II maintenance fund and for Parks approved ACC sponsored events that “benefit the Statue of Liberty Plaza and the community’s enjoyment or involvement with the plaza”. This ongoing Phase III sale has resulted in the addition of 257 engraved bricks and 1 Tribute Plaque which were installed in the Plaza by Seattle Parks & Recreation in May of this year.
This sale will continue until the remaining supply of bricks and plaques has been exhausted. There are currently 255 bricks and 5 Tribute Plaques remaining. This number was established after consulting with the original Plaza designers who want to preserve the existing spiral pattern of engraved bricks in the main floor of the Plaza. All new bricks will be installed in the 2 paths and the 2 landings of the stairs. If you, or someone you know, are interested in purchasing a brick or plaque, you will find the following links useful.

Seattle Parks & Recreation has informed us that they will be doing additional landscaping work at the Plaza this fall. This will include the replacement of some plants that did not do well during the winter months. The new plants will be paid for out of the maintenance funds that have been raised through the sale of engraved bricks and Tribute Plaques. If you are interested in being part of a volunteer work party to assist with this, please contact Eilene at libertyplaza@msn.com or (206) 933-8352.
SEATTLE PARKS & RECREATION WORKING ON A FIX FOR THE PATINA PROBLEM
Seattle Parks & Recreation is currently working with Tiffany Hedrick, of the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, to resolve the discoloration problem that has been noted on the Statue/Lantern, and the bronze plaque on the south side of the statue pedestal. This work may include the removal of the patina that was applied to these bronze pieces and the repatination of them.
