Heavey and Fitzgibbon faced challengers, Marcee Stone who was endorsed by the 34th District Democrats, and Independant candidate Geoffrey Mac McElroy.
Heavey's campaign night party took place at his father, Judge Michael Heavey's house located near the Fauntleroy Ferry.
"I want to thank all the volunteers and supporters," said Heavey. "I am very pleased with tonight's outcome. It really resonated with the voters, all the hard work we put in day in and day out from sign waving to door belling to sign waving. It's pretty clear that volunteer enthusiasm really showed today. It's always difficult with finite resources reaching every individual voter. From the beginning I had the goal of door belling the most doors and having the most one on one personal contact and I think we see in today's totals that I was successful."
He then headed for the Beveridge Place and joined Sen. Joe McDermott and supporters there.
Fitzgibbon's campaign night party was held at the Heartland Cafe in the Admiral District and when he entered, the room erupted in cheers and chants of "Joe, Joe Joe!" as he high fived and hugged his way through the room. Dozens of his supporters cheered and he rose to thank them and point out that his family was there including his mother, father and older sister.
"Going to the general this fall and I'm gonna win," he said (...) We wouldn't be here if it weren't for the tremendously broad support this campaign has gotten from environmental groups, labor groups, progressive groups, from newspapers that all together made the assessment that I'm the candidate best prepared to be an effective advocate for the 34th District in Olympia.
"I'm very proud that this campaign has been positive and focused on the issues (...) I think the most important thing for the voters of this district is to try to create a business climate where we can have job growth in this economy. I've been out doorbelling every day and it's been heartbreaking to hear how many folks who are out of work or under employed, that's got to be our top priority in Olympia, and it's going to be," Fitzgibbon said.
One of his supporters who worked with him in Olympia, Robert Knoll said, "It's great to see a colleague have success on a night like this and you know all of us who work with him in Olympia know that he can do this job with one arm tied behind his back."
His campaign manager Laura Hicks agreed his success was due in part to his positive approach, "There's not been any back biting or nasty remarks from our campaign." Hicks pointed out that Fitzgibbon is an avid campaigner and that this is what garnered support. "I think it's his enthusiasm. I think it's the support that he's gotten from the different organizations like The Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, the State Labor Council and the support he's seen across the board from young to old so it's not just a single demographic that's supporting him."
Hicks thinks that Fitzgibbon's attitude toward the race is what made him stand out.
Under the state's "Top Two" system, the two candidates who receive the most primary votes move on to the general election, regardless of party.
