SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Little League to get a new 'Snack Shack'
Tue, 10/12/2010
The Old Faithful Snack Shack from Bar-S Playfield (Located at the end of Admiral Way in Alki) was removed on Tuesday, Oct. 12 and a new expanded version will be constructed in its place.
The new shack is 19' 4" x 32, or almost twice the size of the old building. It will have men's and women's restrooms, and space for storage. The foundation should be poured for it next week. Volunteers will build the actual structure.
The old shack has been there for well over a decade according to West Seattle Little League President Mark Terao. The plan calls for the old shack to remain on site temporarily to be used for storage during construction. A temporary fence will go up around the spot where the new shack is being built to secure the project.

Mike Werlech,of Werlech Construction, board member and an umpire (and parent to former Little League players) was in charge of the move and earlier in his 13 year association with the organization built a short, platform deck on the old shack. When they removed it today, there was a wager as to how much money they would find, dropped by people fishing in their pockets for change. Sure enough, they counted $31.54 in quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.
West Seattle Little League has been working with the Parks Department for some time to get this project done. "The first set of drawings ever submitted to the city was in 1958," said Werlech, "those plans called for a concession stand, below ground dugouts and all the fences. It's been a long process."
With the financial help of the Boeing Company, Mariners Care, many local businesses and residents the organization has finally reached the point of construction. The grant for the purpose was $100,000, of which $30,000 was spent on fencing so far. "The balance of that we're using to put up this new building, as well as a new storage building" said Terao. That building will house all the equipment and have room for the umpires to change clothing, and space for board meetings.
Completion of the project is scheduled sometime in January 2011.
For a minimum donation of $100 you can have your family/business/organizations name placed on the permanent "Thank You" plaque that will be affixed to the building. Sponsors during the season get a sign on the back of the shack all season for $500. For the Thank You Plaque, that same donation puts you at the top of the list and again, is permanent.
The public is invited to join in the ribbon cutting ceremony that will take place prior to the start of the 2011 season which begins in April.
