Perry Robert Townsend died of natural causes at Wesley Homes on Aug. 6, 2006.
He was married to Gertrude Townsend for 60 years, before she passed away in 1994. Perry is survived by two sons, Michael (Diane) and David, who live in Des Moines; two grandchildren, Deanna and Ryanne; and one great-grandson, Mason. He is also survived by two step-grandchildren, Sara and Kelly, and two step-great grandchildren, Lucy and Delaney. Fifteen beloved nephews and nieces are also living throughout Washington, Minnesota and California.
Perry was born in Chokio, Minn., where he worked for his father who owned a livery stable, silent theater, and the town pub and eatery. He then went on to work for his brother George, who owned a print shop in New Ulm. He later bought a tavern and barbershop. He went on to receive his Master Barber license, along with Gertrude who received her Beauty license. When the war came along he was compelled to join the Air Force and completed tours of duty in Edmonton and Anchorage. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
After his tour of duty he accepted a position with Northwest Airlines, with whom he was sent to Tokyo after the war to help NWA establish the first maintenance base for a U.S. airline. He remained with NWA for 37 years until he retired at age 62 in 1975. He was an avid fisherman, bowler and billiards player.
Perry was active with the Catholic Church at St. Francis of Assisi in Seahurst. As a member of the Knights of Columbus he set records for recruiting new members and was given numerous awards for his accomplishments. He also served as an usher for over 20 years. He had many good friends and associates in the church, many good friends at NWA and many good friends in the community. He will be missed immensely.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Seahurst on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 11a.m. A viewing will be held one hour before the Mass.
