Last week brought enough snow and cold temperatures to bring Seattle to a halt for a few days. In West Seattle, it seems the weather may have brought crime to a near halt as well. From Nov. 23 until Nov. 29 there was only one burglary reported (non-residential) on s.w. Thistle and a total of five car prowls reported. It seems even the criminals would rather stay in and cozy up to a good book and ample blankets.
Two victims of a burglary on Delridge Way s.w. last weekend were given the double whammy. The day before, King County Sheriffs stopped by to evict them from the residence and gave them until Dec. 1 to move everything out. The next day they were staying at their cousin’s house (right next door) when they heard glass breaking from the general direction of their soon-to-be-old-place. They looked around and saw nothing suspicious, then about an hour later they were hanging out outside and saw lights and the silhouette of two people in their living room. They immediately called 911, but the suspects were gone by the time police arrived. The only things missing were family photos and “important papers.” Police also found a dog in the backyard that the evicted tenants said was left by the prior tenants. Police took the dog to an animal shelter and were unable to find the suspects.
Police responded to an assault on 3rd Ave in downtown Seattle last week where the “highly intoxicated” victim refused medical treatment for a “large laceration on the corner of his lip.” The victim told police he was assaulted by a man who used to work for him, but that he would not give his attacker’s name for fear of getting him in trouble. He did, however, tell police that he planned on firing the suspect. When medics arrived at the scene they told the victim he needed stitches and offered transportation to Harborview Medical Center. The man refused, saying he would go to the hospital on his own. He then talked about “freedom and the importance of fighting for freedom.” Police left the victim with a case number in case he decided to tell them who the suspect was.
A husband and wife were shocked last week when they pulled up to a stoplight at Martin Luther King Jr. Way s. and s. Cloverdale around 4:20 p.m. As they waited out the red light, an unknown man crossed the intersection and gave the couple a “weird” look as he passed. Just as the light turned green, the man pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at them. The couple sped away unharmed, thanks in part to good timing on the green light. Responding officers were unable to find the suspect.
