Carl Jensen passed away on Nov. 21, 2006, of cancer at age 97. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Archer Jensen.
He leaves a son Larry Jensen and wife Joanie, three grandchildren, one great grandchild and nephews and nieces Ernest Jensen, Ron Jensen, Roy and Eleanor Archer, Jerry and Darlene McNaul, Betty Stone, Barbara Tollefson and Carita Calderone, as well as special friends Hans Thompson and Jim Huntley.
An alumnus of Central Washington and the University of Washington, Carl enjoyed a fulfilling life. He began as a teacher, coach and counselor and served 18 years as Superintendent of the Highline School District. Among his many educational achievements were Founder or Co-founder of: Highline Community College, The Pacific Science Center, The NW Regional Educational Laboratory, The "Carl Jensen Environmental Education Center" at Camp Waskowitz and the SeaTac Occupational Skills Center. He was a former president of the Washington State Superintendents Association and was active in the American Association of School Administrators.
He was named the "Citizen Of The Century" by several Southwest King County cities and the Highline Times/Des Moines News. He served as a Director on the Boards for PEMCO Insurance, Evergreen Bank, State Teachers Credit Union and Westside S&L.
In place of a memorial service there will be an "Open House" at Camp Waskowitz honoring founder Carl Jensen on a Sunday to be announced.
