Stanislaw Milkowski was born in Lublin, Poland, on Palm Sunday, 1918. He attended grade school and high school in Lublin.
After graduating, he served in the Polish army's cavalry unit during the Second World War. While in the service, he was held as a prisoner of war by the Russians. When Hitler invaded Russia, he and all the labor-camp prisoners were released. Most of them ended up in Africa where some of them, including Stan, volunteered for the Royal Air Force. He then traveled to Great Britain, where he completed the remainder of his service.
After the war, he visited a friend in Dublin, Ireland. While there, their friend recommended he attend one of the socials planned for the servicemen, and there he met his future wife, Helen. They were married on December 23, 1946.
Stan subsequently studied in London and Dublin and received a BS degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from University College, Dublin.
In 1957, Stan, Helen and their family immigrated to the United States, living first in San Francisco and then in Seattle.
After moving to Seattle, Stan was employed at the Boeing Company for 30 years and retired at age 71.
Stan had many hobbies. He enjoyed inventing useful tools around the house, creating unique Christmas ornaments, as well as gardening and baking. However, his passion was playing bridge and golf. Stan realized every golfer's dream of a hole in one in 2003 and again in 2004!
In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at many organizations, including the River Bend Golf Course in Kent, the Millionaire Club in Seattle, and the Boeing Bluebills. Stan also tutored eighth grade students in math at local schools for several years. He was an active member in the parishes of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bernadette.
In 2005, Stan accomplished several significant goals. He organized a collection of golf clubs and golf balls to be sent to the troops stationed in Iraq. He wrote and published a book on the physics of golf in Polish, and after many years of composition, he also finished writing his memoirs.
Stan and Helen are survived by their two children: Stan Milkowski of Seattle (wife Nancy) and Irene Welter of Luxembourg (husband Tom). They are also survived by their four grandchildren: Carla Mathay-Welter (husband Tom Mathay), Michelle Milkowski Allen (husband Shawn Allen), Stan Milkowski Jr., and Alex Welter.
Carla and her husband recently became the parents of Stan's only great-grandson, Jules Mathay.
Stan passed away on October 11, 2006, in Lublin, Poland, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
