On Jan. 12 shortly after 10 a.m. a woman was in her basement on Fauntleroy Way s.w. when she heard her two small dogs barking excitedly upstairs. She found the spontaneous cacophony odd and joined in, yelling at the dogs several times to quiet down. After ten minutes the dogs kept yelping so the woman went upstairs to investigate. She discovered the back door into the kitchen was wide open and wet footprints led from the door into the living room, then back out the same way. It appeared the burglar had time to ruffle through some papers and bills on a dining table, but nothing was stolen. The woman believes she scared the suspect away when she called up for her dogs to quit barking. The responding police officer inspected the area for evidence, found none and advised the woman, “to consider a house alarm, a large loud dog, and better security doors to help prevent further incidents.”
Last week on the 4100 block of California Ave s.w. two burglars forced open an alley-side door and slipped into a residential garage. The burglary victim had surveillance cameras installed in and saw the following: Aware of the security camera, the male and female suspects shielded their faces from view as they “popped” the door on the vehicle parked inside. The female suspect took a ski helmet and the male put on the victim’s ski jacket. Ready to hit the slopes, the burglars left the garage. The man kept his face obscured from camera view, but the woman suspect revealed her face for a moment on tape. A copy of the tape was made for detectives and the investigation is ongoing.
On Jan. 10 a burglary was reported at a storage unit complex on s.w. Yancy St. Sometime over the weekend a suspect cut through the chain link fence and got into the unlocked hallways with access to several units. A window on one end of the hallway faced Yancy St. and the burglar, concerned with privacy, spray painted the window blue to shield anyone from seeing him at work. The suspect broke into four storage units and at the time of the report the extent of loss was unknown.
