Trust and sharing totalled up to a Seattle Christian boys basketball 66-46 Class 1A/2A Nisqually League home victory against the Charles Wright Tarriers last Friday,
Leading only 27-24 early in the third quarter, the Warriors turned into a juggernaut of destruction. Johnny Sutherland drove inside for a lay up to begin the SCS onslaught. Blake Weber and MCkinnon Simpson worked inside and outside to key a12-point scoring run that essentially put the game out of reach. Seattle Christian magnified its margin steadily, establishing a 24-point dominance at one point.
"We just came out with the reminder that we're better," said Simpson, who closed with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line along with a collection of six caroms off the glass. "It ticked us off and we started getting to the net for easy layups."
Weber torched a three-point missile to ignite a 7-0 Warrior start to the game. SCS powred to a 14-3 margin before settling for a 14-4 lead after one quarter. Six-foot, five-inch junior Chaise DeVries was an effective Warrior on the block, scoring six consecutive Seattle Christian points as the Warriors rolled to leads of 20-6 and 26-11. Charles Wright scored a free throw ahead of three consecutive three-balls to cut the lead to 26-21 by halftime and eventually closed within 27-24 to set up the Warrior scoring outburst.
"Our zone gave them the opportunities for the outside shots, so we went back to man-to man like we started the game and took away the opportunities," said SCS head coach Shaun De Yager.
Another element factored into the successful equation.
"We were more effective because of trust with our team," stated DeVries. "There are lots of people who can score. We knew we could all lead. I have trust that the ball can come inside or go outside for us to score."
In addition to finishing the game with 12 points, Devries dished off quality passes from the high post to cutting players.
Sharing the ball was a goal for the Seattle Chrisitian squad.
"We talked about winning four quarters," related SCS head coach Shaun De Yager. "We didn't win the second quarter, so we had to win the next quarter and protect our court. Talking about trusting and sharing was important. We weren't finishing early and had to execute better."
Accumulating 20 assists as a team showcased the emphasis on sharing. Weber earned nine points (3-for-3 from three-point range) and dished out six assists. Ten players scored for SCS as part of a 27-of-48 field goal accuracy.
On Saturday, the Warrior boys took a 10-4 first quarter lead and dominated Shoreline Christian all the way in a 53-36 non-league home win.
Simpson tallied 14 while the rest of scoring was evenly spaced out. Cody Miller ( 8), Richard Jensen (7), Shawn Abe (6), Weber (6) were examples of how evely the scoring was spread out.
Seattle Christian moved its overall record to 8-7 with an accompanying 5-4 league mark.
