Greenwood Elementary is hosting a Literacy Night tomorrow, Thursday, March 10. According to their website, the Literacy Night is an evening of "reading fun, a raffle, games, free book and prize giveaways and dinner for the whole family."
Fifth graders Renea Harris-Peterson and Kahlid Johnson recount what happened at the last Literacy Night in October:
"You could hardly fit through the door at Greenwood Elementary’s Family Literacy Night on October 26th. All of the students, teachers, and families gathered in the cafeteria to celebrate reading. We all had food, activities, a raffle, and books to take home, and a fun “camp fire” to sit around.
There were hot dogs, tangy juice and a variety of chips to choose from. Ken’s Market and Greenwood Market generously donated the food. To the right of the food station were convenient lunch tables to sit at.
Rick, one of our tutors at Greenwood, was the weenie griller and Mr. Lommers, one of the teachers, served the chips. We had extra hot dogs but, as Rick said, “It’s better to have too much than too little.”
In the cafeteria, markers flew off the coloring table. The fake fire’s glow lit up the stage as families read nearby. All of the activity tables were loaded with laughing and smiling families. If you asked to sit down at the Word Problems table, everyone would scoot over an inch for you to join in the fun. “It’s great!” Olga, a fifth-grade student, said. Not just the kids were having fun – the parents were, too. “It’s bringing people together. They’re playing games and reading together,” said one parent.
Our raffle was great. There were reading games from Top Ten Toys and a gift card from the Green Bean Café. The winners were enthusiastic when they won. Luckily, everyone won today because they all had the chance to get a book of their choice to take home.
All in all, Greenwood’s Literacy Night was a total blowout! “I enjoy working with
students, parents, and teachers to help create better education for students,” our principal said."
The event takes places from 6 pm until 7:30 pm in the Commmons of the Greenwood Elementary School on 144 N.W. 80th Street.
