Police Blotter: A burglar in need of stamps, a shoplifter in the children's section, and a string a burglaries pries though Ballard

6:30 p.m. on March 14th. 53rd block of Ballard Avenue NW.
A Ballard Avenue business was burglarized overnight by a suspect in need of stamps. The complainant of the shops had arrived Monday morning and noticed some boxes were out of place and area behind the cash register desk had been rifled through. The back office had also been left in disarray. The back window at the store had been broken and replaced with plywood by the burglar(s).
Complainant said the only items found missing were a book of stamps and $10 in change.
4:11 p.m. on March 14th. 1st block of N.W. 85th St
A shoplifter entered a Greenwood clothing business at 100th and 86th on Monday afternoon. The same suspect had attempted to shoplift items in the same shop three days prior.
The suspect was observed going into the children's clothing section and putting several items in his backpack. He then closed the pack and started to walk toward the front of the store. The suspect walked passed the cash registers and exited the first set of doors. Outside the store the suspect was confronted by the store's security officers. They asked the suspect to come back into the store. A security officer asked the suspect to show the contents of his backpack. The suspect opened the pack and gave the office the items he took. While the pack was open, the officers noticed other items inside and again asked the suspect to come back inside the store.
The suspect refused, shoved the security officer and walked passed him. Suspect was last seen walking westbound toward Greenwood.
An area check was done but he was not located.
8 a.m. on March 12th. 80th block of 12th Avenue NW.
Early Saturday morning a woman returned to her home to find her rear door had been pried open as was the rear bedroom sliding window. It was apparent that the suspect entered her house, rummaged through her medicine cabinet, bedroom closet and second bedroom but did not take anything.
Suspect left through the rear door. There were foot prints around the rear of the house but no prying tool was found.
1:23 a.m. on March 13. 7th block of N 95th Street
Around midnight Saturday morning, police responded to a report of a burglary. The victim told police that earlier in the day the suspect(s) entered without permission through a living room window.
The suspect took a black Apple MacBook, a Canon Rebel XTI digital SLR camera, and broke his
Apple iPhone. The victim told police that he locked the front door when he left and when he came home he
noticed the door was unlocked. It was unclear which window had been used for entry, but the window facing south had a cut in the screen and the inside pane of class broken. A window facing west had some dirt from a flower pot outside the window, on the sill, and on the carpet below. Police could not identify prints.
10:51 a.m. on March 11. 75th block of 34th Avenue NW
On Thursday police responded to a burglary at a Ballard home. The victim told police that sometime during the night a suspect(s) used a ladder left in the back yard from to enter a second story unsecured window.
The house was being remodeled and several power hand tools, like nail guns, were taken from some of the workers on site.
6:49 p.m. on March 13. 71st block of 28th Avenue NW
On Friday evening police responded to a report of a residential burglary. The victim told police that she left her home on Friday around 5:00 p.m. and returned on Sunday to find her house had been burglarized.
The suspect entered the home by breaking a small window in the basement. The suspect took roughly $19,000 worth of bicycles, a laptop, and assorted jewelry. The victim’s neighbor said that she saw two figures riding bicycles from behind the house on Saturday night, but could not provide a description because it was dark.
11:06 p.m. on March 12. 73rd block of 17th Avenue NW
On Saturday afternoon police responded to a residential burglary. The victim told police that the suspect used some type of pry bar to open a kitchen window and busted the locking mechanism and window frame.
The victim found the kitchen window open when he came home. The victim’s neighbor said that his dog started to bark around 7:30 p.m. Fingerprints were not located.
11:37 p.m. on March 12. 77th bock of 13th Avenue NW
On Saturday night police responded to a burglary at a residence. The victims told police that while they were out watching a movie, an unknown suspect(s) entered their residence through a basement window that was forced open. A black, 13-inch HP laptop was stolen, worth roughly $2,000. The victims said that all the doors of the residence were locked and secured when they arrived home and it is possible that the suspect(s) entered and exited through the same window. The victims said that the gate that leads to the alleyway behind their residence should have been closed, but was found ajar. No fingerprints were located.
10:19 p.m. on March 11. 9th block of NW 63rd Street
Late Friday night police responded to a residential burglary. The victim told police that she arrived home around 7:00 p.m. and discovered dirty footprints leading from the bedroom to the living room. The suspect had pried open a bedroom window, climbed through, and walked into the living room. The suspect exited through the same window. The victim searched the house, but reported nothing stolen. At first the victim was unsure if her dog sitter had climbed through the window, but found out that he had not climbed through any windows. Pry marks were located outside the bedroom window, but fingerprints were not found.
1:49 a.m. on March 12. 73rd block of Linden Avenue N
Late Friday night police responded to a burglary at a Phinney Ridge business. The victim told police that the business had been closed up and secured for the evening when an unknown suspect entered through a door facing the alley. The suspect took an Apple Mac Book Pro laptop, which had been left on a desk. A witness from a business next door had seen the suspect in the doorway as she parked her car. Police walked through the business and found that a rock had been thrown through the alley doorway and the suspect had reached through to unlock the deadbolt. The rock used to smash open the window had struck and damaged a storage container. The witness told police that around 7:35 p.m. as she drove into the parking lot behind the business, her headlights shined on the suspect, who appeared to be crouched in the doorway of the victim’s business. The witness through the suspect was urinating on the doorway and gestured for the suspect to leave. The witness said that the suspect then walked northbound in the 73rd block of Linden Avenue N. The witness described the suspect as a six foot tall “homeless looking,” stocky, 40 to 45-year-old man. The suspect had blond, scraggly facial hair and was wearing a maroon hoodie with a blue windbreaker jacket. The witness told police that the suspect appeared to have something bulky underneath the front of his clothes. Fingerprints were located from the inside of the alley door.
