SLIDESHOW: Wayfinding kiosks going up around West Seattle
Fri, 04/08/2011
For those who are new to the area and even long time residents who think they've seen everything there is to see in West Seattle a series of 8 new Wayfinding Kiosks are being installed around the area with the first one going up on Friday April 8 at Junction Plaza Park. The remainder will be installed over the course of next week.

The product of Feet First and well known local artists Paul Sorey and Mike Raney the kiosks feature walking maps and location specific art.
Through a grant of $99,916 from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Feet First worked with nine neighborhood districts to support a kiosk and wayfinding project, holding community meetings to seek input.
The kiosks provide the necessary wayfinding to make the trails of West Seattle functional to locals as well as people new to the area and provide an important addition to the transportation system.
Through this project four community groups were engaged in the process. Feet First hired artists Paul Sorey and Mike Raney and worked with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and the Department and Planning and Department (DPD) to get the proper permitting. It is the first neighborhood wayfinding and kiosk project in the City of Seattle.
The project installed 86 wayfinding signs and eight kiosks throughout West Seattle on the westside of the peninsula from Admiral to Wildwood near the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal.
The locations are:
- Junction Plaza Park
- Me Kwa Mooks Park
- Alki Beach Park
- Belvedere Overlook
- Fauntleroy Park
- Emma Schmitz Park
- Lincoln Park
- Admiral Junction
This project complements the printed West Seattle Trails map and makes it more comfortable for people to walk around the neighborhood, which will increase physical activity, support public safety efforts and improve the environment.
Wayfinding signs were sited in the public right of way along the trails, approximately every quarter mile, at potentially confusing turns in the trail, and at intersections of trails. The sign posts indicate nearby destinations (e.g. parks, libraries, business districts, etc.). By installing the network of signs, people will be able to follow the trail system without a map.
Feet First created the large walking map, which is highlighted at each kiosk with an enlargement of the specific area on the other side which shows each kiosk location, nearby destinations (library, schools, parks, etc.), routes though an urban area, specific trails in wilderness areas.
Feet First contributed to the knowledge and GIS input to the city for the trails in many of these wilderness areas - Schmitz Reserve Park, Fauntleroy Park, Riverview Park, and Westcrest Park, in West Seattle.
Complementing the kiosks will be a printed map, which will be completed next week with a generous print donation from the YMCA and Harbor Properties.
