"Tender Mercies of the Murphy" is a painting of the mezzanine in Raymond's building. "A building that sort of saved me," she said.
Ballard artist Lina Raymond is currently showing her newest paintings in the "Sugar on a Burn" show at wine bar and restaurant, Portalis on Ballard Avenue.
Raymond debuted her art in Ballard two years ago at Senor Moose. She has since exhibited her art at Cupcake Royale, 5 Corner Market and Portalis.
She said it feels good to have yet another Ballard showing.
"I love sharing my art with my fellow Ballardians and those who visit us," Raymond said.
Her previous art showing at 5 Corner Market cleared her out and forced her back in the studio to make new paintings.
"Probably the biggest difference for me is the confidence I think I am gradually gaining and a comfort level to be even more open and honest with the work," she said about the difference between "Sugar on a Burn" and previous art showings.
Raymond said that most of the paintings featured in the Portalis show represent "a sort-of muffled scream".
"One can't scream too loudly in an upscale wine bar/restaurant," she joked. "I have a problem with right-wing doings, I'll leave it at that."
The show's title, "Sugar on a Burn", is a wide umbrella covering a number of concepts and emotions she needed to express, Raymond said.
"Putting sugar on a burnt tongue is supposed to release some heat and aid relief, but you have to do it immediately and it's a very limited remedy for brief relief from pain."
Some concepts under this umbrella are: To have had and had not; Gaming the system; Desire. Delusion; and Rescue and Redemption.
"Sugar on a Burn" will run through June 3rd at Portalis at 5205 Ballard Ave N.W. open Tuesday through Sunday.
