Police Blotter: Attacks with fist and with pen; fight over stolen screwdriver; wave of burglaries hits Ballard and surrounding areas

3:00 p.m. on April 10th. 22nd block of 59th St. NW.
A man was assaulted on April 10th when he went to a friend’s house. The victim said that he knocked on the door and a man spoke rudely to him and punched him in the mouth. The victim said that the assailant was a large, strong man, and the punch knocked the victim to the ground. The victim landed on his arm, then went to the hospital and learned that his arm was broken in three places. He then called the police. The victim believes that the man who punched him is a boyfriend of the female friend he went to visit. He said that the woman is married but has multiple boyfriends and is using illegal drugs. The victim was visibly intoxicated when the police interviewed him, and he repeatedly told the responding officer that he had drunk six brandies.
1:47 a.m. on April 10th. 85th block of 15th Ave. NW.
A man said that he was stabbed in the ear with a pen after arguing with another man in a bar. A bartender identified the suspect and said the suspect had been very unruly in the bar and was arguing with the staff. The suspect left before he could be kicked out, but then returned and got into an argument with the victim, which resulted in the stabbing. The victim was treated at the scene and released. He declined to press charges.
7:51 p.m. on April 10th. 64th block of 8th Ave. NW.
A police officer responding to a disturbance call at a business on 8th Ave. found a loss prevention officer holding a man to the ground. The loss prevention officer reported that he had seen the suspect leave the business without paying for a screwdriver. He confronted the suspect and asked him to return the screwdriver. The suspect started to comply, but when the officer told the suspect that he was going to call the police, the man panicked and lunged toward the officer. The officer was bitten during the struggle, but managed to subdue the suspect and recover the screwdriver. The suspect was taken into custody.
11 p.m. on March 10th. 73rd block of Greenwood Ave. N.
A restaurant on Greenwood Ave. was burglarized late on the night of March 10th and the burglar left his or her tool behind. The suspect broke through a French door and entered the back office, then moved a filing cabinet and used an axe to break the wood floor and access the safe in the floor. The suspect stole the cash inside as well as a laptop in the office, but left the axe at the scene. The restaurant’s alarm system did not go off and no fingerprints were found at the scene.
10:57 p.m. on April 8th. 72nd block of 30th Ave. NW.
A woman returned home at around 10:00 on the night of April 8th to find her home broken into. She found a kitchen window open and her mail strewn about the room. The victim then went into her bedroom and found that her jewelry boxes and dresser drawers had been rummaged through. The responding officer determined that most of the house had been rummaged through, but the victim did not think that anything had been taken. Her checkbook was sitting in plain view in the kitchen, but no checks were missing. No fingerprints were found.
6:30 p.m. on April 8th. 28th block of NW 71st St.
A burglar broke into a home on 71st street on April 8th, taking two laptops and two jars of coins. The missing property is valued at around $1,700. The burglar may have entered through the back door of the residence. Police report that at least two similar burglaries occurred in the area on the same night.
4:03 p.m. on April 7th. 41st block of 2nd Ave. NW.
A woman chased a burglar off of her property on the evening of April 7th. She found the suspect crouching next to the house, wearing a backpack and holding two laptops. The victim ordered the suspect to drop everything and leave the property. The suspect said that he would go, and he dropped the backpack and laptops on the ground and began to walk away. He picked up another backpack at the edge of the property before he ran away. The backpack that the suspect dropped contained feminine hygiene products and female undergarments. The victim was able to give the police a very detailed description of the suspect, who she said was a white male in his 20s and about six feet tall with a long brown ponytail. The suspect was wearing a brown stocking hat, a black North Face jacket, jeans, and a wallet hanging from a chain. Other citizens nearby also reported seeing the suspect, but a K-9 unit was unable to locate him. Another burglary occurred nearby an hour and a half before, on Baker Ave. NW.
2:15 p.m. on April 7th. 44th block of Baker Ave. NW.
The victims returned home on the afternoon of April 7th to find that their back door had been broken open. Both bedrooms had been ransacked. The burglar took a stereo system, jewelry box, and coins. A kitchen knife was found near the back door and the police were able to lift a partial print from it.
12:55 p.m. on April 7th. 20th block of NW Market St.
A burglar broke into a restaurant on Market Street and rummaged around the cash register but did not steal anything. The business has an alarm system, but the alarm did not go off. The complainant reviewed his security tapes in search of evidence. No fingerprints were found because the restaurant had already been cleaned and was open for business when the police arrived.
9:21 a.m. on April 7th. 26th block of NW Market St.
A burglary at a business on Market Street resulted in damage to a candy machine. The burglar broke a window and entered the building but did not steal anything. The owner of the business found a knit cap on the floor and stated that she had seen a person loitering in an alley near the business wearing the same cap on the previous evening. The police did not find the individual in the area.
