West Seattle moved on in the 2011 Metro League baseball tournament, winning in seven innings with a 3-0 shutout over the Chief Sealth Seahawks on May 13.
The Wildcats win puts them in Game 11 of the tourney against Bishop Blanchet, the winner is Metro #3 to state and the loser takes the Metro #4 spot. The #4 will play King County’s #2 for a state birth on May 17.
West Seattle came into the game on the tail a 6-0 win over Franklin on May 12 after losing to Seattle Prep in the tournament opener on May 9. The Seahawks won their opener against Bishop Blanchet, but lost to O’Dea 11-2 on May 12, putting them into the match up with their cross-peninsula rivals.
West Seattle’s Devin Smith pitched a good game and kept the Seahawk bats cold throughout the game. Sealth had only a handful of hits as the Wildcat infield smothered anything hit low and turned the outs.
The Seahawks played disciplined defense throughout the game with a few missteps that cost them the runs. D’nique Harris-Welch pitched a solid game for Sealth after giving up a few runs early.
WS Wildcat Latrey Newsome went 2-3 hitting on the night after a 4-4 performance against Franklin, and started out his night with a double in the first. Kellon Gearon followed it up with an RBI double, putting Newsome in for the 1-0 lead. Gearon scored as well, putting West Seattle up 2-0 after the first.
In the fourth inning Wildcat Jeff Freeman got on base with a blooper up the middle. Two batters later he stole third after a wild pitch went to dirt. Seahawk catcher Misioka Tupuola gathered the ball and threw high over third, allowing Freeman to stroll in for the 3-0 run.
Chief Sealth threatened to chip the lead down in the fifth inning, getting their first two runs on base from Izac Bauer and Bradly Olinger with two outs, but the inning ended after a throw out to first.
West Seattle’s pitcher Smith closed out the game in the top of the seventh inning with two infield dribblers gathered by the Wildcat infield for outs at first and a fly out to deep center.
West Seattle plays Bishop Blanchet (who beat Eastside Catholic 7-5 earlier in the day) on Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at the Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center, 1321 s.w. 102nd St. Their game will be followed by Seattle Prep vs. O’dea for the Metro #1 and #2 seed to state.
