The Alki Summer Streets and Car Free Day really began with crack of the starter's pistol at 9:30 am for the annual West Seattle 5k where an estimated 1400 runners and walkers shook off the winter cobwebs and filled Alki Avenue.
After the race the booths began to sprout along the Avenue with vendors and others providing information, entertainment, and lots of opportunities for fun.
The music began at 12 Noon and continued through the afternoon.
Event organizer Sandy Payne, now Secretary for the Alki Community Council, primary sponsors for the event said," It's been a huge challenge. It was late notice and we were originally going to do something in July and SDOT asked us to be a part of this event so we moved up our plans 2 months. We've been running around recruiting like crazy."
She was happy about the rain free weather and the high attendance which was estimated in the thousands.
Seattle City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen joined Libby Carr and Payne on stage to remind people that only 20 bricks remain for sale in the Liberty Plaza surrounding the Alki Statue of Liberty. If you'd like to purchase a commemorative brick your opportunity is closing soon but you can do so here.
