If convicted, the sentencing range is 16 to 24 1/2 years in prison.
Smith will be arraigned on Sept. 1 at the King County Courthouse and remains jailed on a $1 million bond, according to Dan Donohoe with the prosecutor's office.
Update 4 for 11:30pm, Aug 18: A 25-year-old man was arrested at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 at his home in West Seattle, “not far from the shooting scene” in White Center, according to King County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Travis DeFries.
The suspect was booked in jail for investigation of homicide later that evening and, according to King County’s jail registry, his bail has been denied.
Two suspects are still at-large in the shooting death of 23-year-old Maria “Sweetheart” Failautusi. She was shot in the head, according to medical examiners, and died at the scene near the corner of S.W. Roxbury and 15th Ave S.W. shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 16.
Deputy DeFries has not confirmed that the arrested suspect is the actual shooter, saying “right now we want all three, they are all equal in our mind.”
SWAT team and KCSO Major Crimes Unit detectives located the suspect at his home, resulting in a “peaceful apprehension,” according to Deputy DeFries.
KCSO cited detective work at the shooting scene and tips received from the Aug. 17 release of surveillance footage showing the three suspects at a nearby gas station during the night of the shooting.
“The citizens and business owners of White Center were upset to hear of this tragedy in the area, KCSO Major James Graddon, Commander of the West Precinct, said in a press release. “They have been working hard with us for many years to improve public safety in their neighborhoods. This incident will ultimately be resolved through the continued support of the community and the efforts of deputies and detectives.”
KCSO asks that anyone with information leading to the arrest of the two outstanding suspects call (206) 296-3311 or 911.
“We’re going to solve this quick and we are proving it right now,” Deputy DeFries said, thanking a helpful White Center community for coming forward with information to this point.
30 prior incidents for the arrested suspect
A background check of the suspect arrested on Aug. 17 shows a rap sheet of 30 prior arrests including multiple DUIs, driving on a suspended license and drug charges.
The suspect’s name will not be publicly released until formally charged.
Update 3 for 8pm, Aug. 17: The Seattle Times reports a suspect was arrested on Aug. 17 in the shooting death of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautusi.
A West Seattle Herald reader reported seeing a raid of a White Center home earlier this afternoon, although it is not clear at this time if the incidents are related.
This story will be updated when further information on the arrest becomes available.
Update 2 for 11am, Aug. 17: King County Sheriff's are on the lookout for three at-large suspects in the shooting death of 23-year-old Sweetheart Failautus in White Center on Aug. 16.
The suspects are "all described as being black males in their early-to-mid-20's," according to Deputy DeFries with the Sheriff's Office.
All three suspects were captured on surveillance footage of a nearby business. That footage is embedded above.
Update for 1pm, Aug 16: A group of family and friends of the 23-year-old shooting victim in White Center were creating a memorial for the woman they call, "Sweetheart" on a light pole near the intersection of S.W. Roxbury and 15th Ave S.W. mid-day on Aug. 16.
Photo collages, balloons and cards made up the memorial.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1 a.m. earlier that morning and police have no suspects in custody at this time.
While the victim's name has not been released by police, her cousin Faatamalii Savea was at the murder scene helping construct the memorial.
"That’s why they named her Sweetheart is because she was the sweetest person inside that family," Savea said. "She’s a very friendly person, she’s a lovable person but when she gets out of hand you have to tell her to face forward instead of going backwards."
"She stands up for her people, for us Samoans," she said.
Original post: A 23-year-old woman of Pacific-Islander descent was shot to death just after midnight in White Center at 15th Avenue s.w. and s.w. Roxbury Street. Detectives are investigating and brought in dogs to look for the suspect.
A 911 call about a fight taking place prompted King County Sheriffs to respond to the area. They initially had a conversation with a group of people and even spoke with the young woman would become the shooting victim.
While on foot patrol shortly after breaking up the fight, police heard shots being fired and came back to find the woman dead.
While people are being questioned there are no suspects known at this time.
Deputies were on the scene throughout the morning one remarking,
"It's senseless, like they all are right?"
They searched through bushes near the crime scene and at one point lifted out a drain screen to look for evidence. None was immediately found.
Local business owner Michael Gordon of Uncle Mike's BBQ said that while it might be possible to create an area that would be off limits to those under 21 after a certain hour, the best solution to prevent such incidents is to move forward with the restoration of the area Storefront Deputy. The area has been without this service for more than a year. This effort received new emphasis at a local community meeting where a petition was passed around. Gordon said he has already gotten two pages of signatures.
