A 2 alarm blaze at a single family home in Arbor Heights destroyed much of the structure on Saturday Aug. 27 and required the Seattle Fire Department to resort to a 'long lay' of hose and multiple pumper trucks to get adequate water pressure to fight the blaze. In the interim a foam truck began the fight.
Update for Aug. 29
Seattle Fire investigators have determined the cause of the fire that destroyed an Arbor Heights was accidental, originating with the "spontaneous combustion" of charcoal or wood in a portable fire pit located in the garage.
Total damages are estimated at $430,000, including damage to two nearby houses.
Firefighters and city public utilities will continue to investigate the reason behind two fire hydrants not functioning properly during the blaze. An initial inspection, according to the Seattle PI through KOMO, found no problem with the hydrants and according to the report there is speculation that either two many hoses were hooked up or there was some kind of blockage in the water line.

A fire in a single family residence at 10217 41st Ave. s.w. in Arbor Heights Saturday Aug. 27 around 5:30 pm drew a massive response, cordoned off three blocks around the 2 alarm fire.
Nobody was in the house aside from a couple of pets. One firefighter was taken to Harborview for burns suffered in the fight.
Two hydrants they attempted to use did not have adequate pressure to fight the fire which meant they had to use a "long lay" in which they piggy back pumper trucks to build pressure. This meant they had to connect to multiple pumper trucks positioned around the area, cordoning off the three blocks.
The delay in getting water pressure meant a foam truck was the first one to get into the fight.
Kris Thorson a neighbor, tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but it proved inadequate and another neighbor called 911.
A small explosion was reported during the incident but no details were available. No cause for the fire has yet been determined.
The house appeared to be a total loss.
