RapidRide changes to Avalon Way start Oct. 10
Thu, 10/06/2011
While the King County Metro RapidRide C Line changes to S.W. Avalon Way have met resistance from the Avalon business community, and morphed over time as a result, the plan is finalized and the first phase of construction will happen next week, Oct. 10 - 14.
Here are the details from an SDOT press release:
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and Metro are designing and building transit improvements in West Seattle to prepare for Metro’s “RapidRide C Line”. The improvements will create a faster, more reliable corridor for Metro’s new RapidRide buses.
During the week of October 10-14, work will take place on SW Avalon Way, between the West Seattle Bridge (SW Manning Street) and SW Yancy Street.
Construction crews will install a new bike lane in the southbound direction from the West Seattle Bridge to SW Yancy Street; install a northbound “Transit Only” lane for weekday morning peak hours from 6 to 10 a.m.; install new on-street parking on SW Avalon Way between SW Spokane and SW Manning streets; and, make minor signal modifications at two intersections—at SW Avalon Way & SW Spokane Street, and at SW Avalon Way and 35th Avenue SW.
To allow crews to perform this work, on-street parking will be temporarily restricted, but one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained.
The work on SW Avalon Way is being performed in advance of the nine-day closure of the Alaska Way Viaduct that is set to begin on October 21. This will allow the traveling public time to adjust one week prior to the Alaska Way Viaduct closure.
