Thursday night the Kennedy Catholic Lancers girls soccer team took on the Hazen Highlanders at Renton Stadium for their third and final match between the two teams. Both teams had faced each other twice before, each game resulting in a tie. There was a good crowd out for the game as it was also senior night for Hazen as they had a pre-game ceremony honoring their seniors.

Hazen got an early goal only seven minutes into the game when junior Deedee Green got a shot off from about 10 yards out, giving Hazen a 1-0 lead. It is interesting to note that Green played for Kennedy Catholic last year, but transferred to Hazen.
Kennedy Catholic’s defenders had their hands full, having to counter Hazen’s aggressive offense. Kennedy’s goalkeeper Angie Isernio blocked two shots on goal, one of the shots with a wide open net preventing an almost guaranteed goal for Hazen. Hazen continued to test Kennedy’s defense, attempting several more shots, but Kennedy’s defense proved worthy.
Kennedy Catholic’s Allie Quy, Jordan Kiga, and Kirsten Olsen all blocked shots on goal in the first half, keeping the score 1-0. Hazen’s defense allowed only 4 shots but Kennedy Catholic’s goal keeper Diondre Bourgette was busy due to Hazen’s constant attach.
In the second half things were different. Kennedy Catholic came out much stronger and aggressive, pressing Hazen’s defense. They would actually out shoot Hazen 6-4. On one play Kennedy Catholic’s goalkeeper Diondre Bourgette made a great block on a breakaway shot, again from Hazen’s Deedee Green.
Hazen was plagued with penalties in the second half which made them lose some of their momentum. Sophomore Brianne Sherin was kicked out of the game when she received her second penalty, a red card.
Kennedy Catholic was finally able to score with just 12 minutes left in the game. Hazen’s goalkeeper Priscilla Yu deflected a shot, but the rebound was then kicked in by Kennedy Catholic’s Dakota Nelson, tying the game at 1.
The rest of the game was mainly defensive, allowing no more goals. The game ended once again in a tie, the third between these two teams this season.
After the game Kennedy Catholic's head coach Doug Stamnes said, “We didn’t play well the first 30 minutes, but played well the remaining 50”. He admits they gave up a “bad goal” saying their defense should have stopped it.
“We played great the second half” he said, “And they have to play that well the full 80 minutes”.
