Update for Dec. 3
After a mandatory machine recount, Des Moines Mayor Bob Sheckler is the unofficial winner of Des Moines City Council Position 6 over challenger Rebecca King.
The mandatory machine recount occured Friday, Dec. 2.
Final certification of the recount is set for Friday, Dec. 16.

The mandatory machine recount in the race between Des Moines Mayor Bob Sheckler and his opponent, Rebecca King for council position 6 will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2.
Unofficial results will be posted on the King County Elections website later that day. Final certification of the recounts is set for Friday, Dec. 16.
The Sheckler/King race is the only one of several squeeker election battles in the Highline area that will go to a mandatory recount.
According to King County’s final certified results released Tuesday. Nov. 29 Sheckler received 3,371 votes (50.01 percent.) King garnered 3,340 votes (49.55 percent.) The gap was only 31 votes or .46 percent.
SeaTac City Councilwoman Mia su-Ling Gregerson barely escaped a recount. She received 2,317 votes (50.10 percent) while Erin Sitterley received 2,286 votes (49.43 percent.) Only 31 votes also separated the two candidates but the percentage difference was .67 percent.
In Normandy Park, Stacia Jenkins unseated former mayor Charlie Harrisin in the council election. Jenkins got 1,345 votes (50.54 percent) while Harris got 1,306 votes (49.08 percent.) Thrity-nine votes separated the candidates.
Two races that were very tight on the election night of Nov. 8 widened as more votes were counted.
Normandy Park Mayor Shawn McEvoy ended up 86 votes ahead of Todd McKittrick in their battle for a council seat. McEvoy garnered 1,401 votes (51.32 percent) and McKittirick received 1,315 votes (48.17 percent.)
In Tukwila, final results showed Kate Kruller with 1,462 votes (51.67 percent) in her race for a vacant council post against Louise H. Stander who received 1,348 votes (47.42 percent.)
For a mandatory machine recount, there had to be fewer than 2,000 and one-half of 1 percent difference in the total votes cast for both candidates.
