Fremont Brewery is one of the many local breweries whose beer will be featured at the Washington Beer Commission's Winter Beer Festival this weekend.
The temperatures are dropping, trees are standing bare, and snow is falling in the mountains. Winter season is here which means it’s time for winter ales.
Sample some of the best regional winter beers around at the annual Winter Beer Festival at Hale’s Ales this weekend.
Organized by the Washington Beer Commission, the Winter Beer Fest features seasonal beers from over 30 local breweries including specials from Seattle’s Big Al Brewing, Big Time Brewing Company, Elysian Brewing Company, Fremont Brewing Company, Hale’s Ales, Schooner EXACT, Pike’s Brewing Company, Rock Bottom Brewery, and Two Beers Brewing Company.
A sold out event every year, the Winter Beer Fest offers some of the most creative brews of the region and the season.
This year’s line-up includes dark malty stouts, robust winter warmers, barrel-aged gems and many more.
Eric Radovich, Executive Director of the Washington Beer Commission, said the Broadsword Scottish Ale from Anacortes Brewery is among his favorites of this year’s selection.
“This strong Scottish ale has robust malty flavors with subtle smokiness and a balanced bitterness from Perle, Cascade and Mt Hood hops,” he said. “[It’s] made with Black Patent, Caramel, Chocolate, Munich and Peat smoked malts for a dark color and rich flavor.”
To enhance the tasting experience, Theo Chocolate is providing chocolate treats and Hales Brewpub will offer fine pub cuisine.
“Just like other types of food pairings, when trying a variety of beers and chocolates the two major flavor strategies apply: complement or contrast the two flavors,” said Radovich. “However, the art of beer and chocolate pairings go beyond the obvious and possibilities are seemingly endless.”
New this year is oyster tasting.
“Taylor Shellfish Farms is excited to offer Winter Beer Festival guests the opportunity to sample fresh raw oysters,” said Radovich.
The event takes place at Hale’s Palladium, 4301 Leary Way NW, on Friday, Dec 2, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec 3, from noon until 9 p.m.
Tickets are available for $25 at the door, which includes a tasting cup and six 5 oz. tastes. Extra tokens are $1.50/piece.
