When Thane Maudslien returns to swim for Kennedy Catholic next year, he will be gunning for two repeats -- and one "four-peat."
Maudslien was named as the Class 3A "Swimmer of the Year" after winning two events and he hopes to repeat that.
The Lancer senior sped to victory in the 100-yard butterfly for his third straight year and also won the 200 freestyle in his first season of competing in the stroke.
"I won the 100 fly for the third year in a row, and I look forward to swimming that next year, too, and getting a four-peat," Maudslien said.
Maudslien won the 200 free in a time of 1 minute, 38.79 seconds and took the 100 fly in 49.89 seconds.
"That was a best time for me in the 200 free, so I'm happy with that," Maudslien said.
Taking a close second in the 100 fly was Wilson's Chase Schell in 50.88.
"I knew it would be close," Maudslien said.
Maudslien's efforts help Kennedy Catholic to capture fifth place as a team in the 3A ranks. The Lancers scored 158 points behind the 311 of Lakeside (Seattle), the 300 score of Mercer Island, the 22.50 points of Bainbridge and the 168 of Liberty.
Thane teamed up with two other JFK athletes with "Th" starting off their names to win the opening 200 medley relay, with Karl Fenster also taking part. Fenster swam the opening leg, then Tharm Sribhibhadh took to the water ahead of Maudslien and then Tommy Thach.
Fenster is a senior, while Sribhibhadh is a junior along with Maudslien and Thach is a freshman.
"We had 10 contributors this weekend, the biggest team we've had since I've been here anyway," said Lancers head coach Sean Prothero. "My guys swam everything well this weekend. Thane and Tommy especially. They really pulled through for me."
Tommy Thach was the winner of the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:50.85, after posting a 1:55.00 in the preliminaries Friday. He took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.09.
Kennedy also tied for 14th place in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.34, thanks to the efforts of senior Jake Mutter, junior Skylar Martens, senior Cole Grove and junior Alex Ballanger.
The Lancers capped off the meet with Maudslien, Thach, Martens and Fenster taking fourth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:15.25.
Sribhibhadh was also 16th in the 100 breast in 1:03.13.
"Thom was seeded 24th going in, and he took 16th," pointed out Prothero.
Fenster was 15th in the 100 backstroke in 57.13.
Brian Donohue of the Lancers also provided a highlight by scoring 398.90 points to take second in the diving competition.
Highline came in 18th in the meet with 37 points.
Senior Jon Graybill paced the Pirates by taking fifth place in the 100 free in 47.23 and he also secured seventh in the 50 free in 21.80.
Freshman Nate Williams captured eighth place in the 500 freestyle in 4:55.23.
Along with Maudslien's award, Decatur High School head coach Rob Hill was named as the "Coach of the Year" for the 3A meet after being killed in an airplane crash on Mount Si.
"He was a phenomenal human being," Hill was credited with by the speaker receiving the award in his place. "Thank you, Robbie. You rock."
MOUNT RAINIER
The Mount Rainier Rams competed in the 4A meet also held at the King County Aquatic Center in only their second season in that classification, taking 17th place with 45 points.
Mount Rainier won the regular season South Puget Sound League North Division title, and had senior Ryan Gansneder open the team's scoring at state by taking 12th place in the 200 free in 1:47.56. Freshman teammate Grant Meyers captured 16th place in the same event in 1:50.70.
Gansneder also took sixth place in the 500 free in 4:48.96 and Meyers was 15th in 5:03.01.
Two juniors scored high in diving for the Rams.
Seth Barronian came in eighth with 295.35 points and Adam Gefkovicz captured a close ninth behind him with a score of 289.70.
Zachary Williams of the Rams placed 17th in the 100 butterfly with a 55.36 time in his junior season.
Mount Rainier came in 15th in the final event -- the 400 free relay -- in a time of 3:26.55. Senior Vincent Lau, Gansneder, Williams and Meyers swam in that race.
