A vigil was staged Sunday evening, March 18 to "remember Greggette Guy and to claim the parks as safe public space."
Guy, 51, was murdered, according to Seattle Police on the evening of March 11. Her body was found 30 feet off shore, floating in Puget Sound.
More than 50 people came to Emma Schmitz Park on the waterfront side of Beach Drive to walk the length of the park, making a statement about and against crime in the neighborhood and honoring the memory of the murdered woman.
One woman attending, "Meg", said, "I've always felt that this is a safe place to be, but this is really sad and unfortunate but we have to keep living our lives."
Another woman named Suzanne commented about the crime in the area. "I think it depends on the day of the week. It depends on the time of day. I think typically on Friday evenings or Saturdays toward the evenings, this area and along Constellation Park, seem to be gathering places for people who don't in any way seem to be connected to the community. I see a lot of alcohol use, I smell drugs, marijuana and I often times will cross the street because I feel uncomfortable." She had this to say about the crime itself, "I called the Southwest Precinct to ask about the safety because I frequently walk along her alone. I wanted to find out if it was safe. They said that during the daytime it's quite safe. It's really after about 10 o'clock that problems can really happen. I think in terms of safety, I think we're very lucky. We're safer than most places but no place is 100%. This is a real powerful reminder of how we need to stay aware and protect ourselves in any way we can."
This is an active investigation and anyone with knowledge or information is urged to call 911.
