Bringing together bikes, dining and fundraising, the third annual Spoke & Food event invites the community to bike to a participating neighborhood restaurant to raise money for a local non-profit.
The commitment is easy. All you need to do is gather some friends and bike to and from one of the participating host restaurants on Tuesday evening for dinner.
Located throughout Ballard and Seattle, the host restaurants have agreed to donate 20 percent of all of their patron revenues from the evening directly to the local non-profit selected by Spoke & Food.
Last year's Spoke & Food event raised more than $3,200 for the Children's Garden program at Seattle Tilth.
This year's Spoke & Food event will raise funds for FamilyWorks (http://www.familyworksseattle.org/), a food bank and family center that nourishes and strengthens individuals and families by connecting people with support, resources, and community. FamilyWorks is a welcoming, supportive haven for people and families in north central Seattle who are seeking a path to long-term resiliency and might not otherwise have access to healthy food or parenting- and life-skills resources.
In addition to raising funds for nonprofits, goals of the Spoke & Food event include influencing the culture of Seattle by prompting people to use their bicycle more to transport themselves to and from daily events and activities that they normally drive to; promoting a healthy lifestyle by creating and event that requires exercise; and exposing how fun biking to dinner can be.
