Every time a homeless person is found dead outside or dies by violence in King County, WHEEL (a homeless women’s organizing effort) and the Church of Mary Magdalene (an ecumenical day ministry) mobilize for our silent witnessing vigil called Women in Black.
Women in Black just learned that on November 16th, Don Farquharson, who was in his 50s, was found dead of undetermined cause in Ballard Commons Park. Mr Farquharson was homeless at the time of his death. According to a friend, he was Eskimo and Tlingit; had been a longshoreman, and is survived by one son. He had been known and beloved in Ballard for some time.
We will stand vigil for Mr Farquharson at noon Wednesday, November 28th, and we are holding his family and friends in our hearts.
Altogether, 30 homeless people died outdoors or by violence in 2011, and 28 already in 2012!
