Kevin Maloney with South Seattle Community College shared the following details and photos (taken by Glenn Gauthier) with the Herald after the school held several events on Feb. 19 for Japanese-American Day of Remembrance, in honor of those who endured the United States' internment camps during World War II:
71 years ago today, former President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order that will never be forgotten. In 1942, Roosevelt signed executive order 9066 Roosevelt that authorized evacuation and incarceration of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, living on the West Coast; most of whom were U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.
South Seattle Community College hosted a series of events dedicated to that historic day that is known as Japanese-American Day of Remembrance.
In addition to Feb. 19's events, South Seattle’s library will feature a collection of photos from the National Archives through the end of the month that captures life in the internment camps during World War II.

Executive order 9066 signed by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 authorized the evacuation and incarceration of 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, living on the west coast. It eventually applied to one third the land area of the U.S. Of the Japanese people held in internment camps 62% were American born children of Japanese immigrants. That order remained in place until it was rescinded by President Gerald R. Ford in 1976.
South Seattle Community College is holding events February 19 to recognize these events.
Here is the schedule:
11 AM - 11:50 AM - the theatrical company. Living Voices, will perform Within the Silence which gives a first-hand account of a Seattle family that was forced into an incarceration camp in Idaho during World War II.
12 : - 12:30 PM - Within the Silence star Narea Kang will participate in a Q & A session to discuss her performance in the production and other projects has been involved with
12:30 PM - The opening reception for the "Meet Me at Higo" art exhibit will be held in the Brockey Center Art Gallery.
Additionally, Beginning February 19, SSCC's library will feature a photo display from the National Archives through the end of the month that captures life in the internment camps during World War II.
