Tyee is excelling in soccer.
The Totem boys team has jumped out to a 9-2 record in the Seamount League for second place behind only Hazen, including a decisive 5-1 victory over Lindbergh this past Friday.
"We play an A-level game every time we put it on the field," said Tyee head coach Allen Rider. "We work a lot on ball control and conditioning."
The Totems jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead by halftime Friday, then scaled back its attack in the second half.
Tyee went out of the locker room and played only nine players instead of the normal 11, and Lindbergh scored its only goal during the second half. The Eagles of Renton played with only 10 on the field the entire game because of a player shortage, not on purpose like the Totems.
"We were way up, and it was a chance to get the guys in," Rider said. "They only played with 10 the whole game. It didn't make sense rushing our guys in."
Tyee took the lead with only 1 minute, 15 seconds elapsed in the first half and never looked back.
Jose Aguiniga, a senior captain, drilled the ball into the left corner of the net to already make it 1-0.
Junior forward Ibrahima Sow struck for the second goal with 21:54 to play in the first half, also finding the left side of the net.
Senior forward/midfielder Liam Maginnis then nailled a hard shot to the back of the net at the 14:26 mark to pad the lead to 3-0, then sophomore midfielder Adama Kante struck just to the right of the middle of the net to make it 4-0 with 12:21 to go until halftime.
Maginnis scored the Totems' final goal with 2:50 left in the first half to make it 5-0.
"They know how to work the ball," said Rider of his players' success.
The suddenly short-handed Totems gave up Lindbergh's only goal of the game with 35:25 remaining in the second half.
Efrain Velasco did the honors for the Eagles, who remained behind the Totems by a 5-1 score the rest of the way.
Tyee is set to return to action Tuesday, when it visits Kennedy for a 6 p.m. game at the Starfire complex in Tukwila. The Totems visit Evergreen Friday before finishing up the regular Seamount League season at home against Hazen at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday, April 30, at Highline Memorial.
Mt. Rainier 1, Auburn 0
Mount Rainier prevailed, 1-0, over the Auburn Trojans in the first game of a double-header at Highline Memorial last Friday.
The victory upped the Rams' record to 7-1-3, putting them second in the South Puget Sound League North Division. The top five teams in each division advance into the SPSL playoffs at the end of the season.
The Rams got off to a slow start in Friday's game, not scoring until 35:48 remained in the second half.
"It was a little frustrating," said Mount Rainier head coach Steve Mohn. "We did not have a great first half. We were lucky it was 0-0 at halftime"
The second half was a different story, however, as the Rams put the only goal they needed in with only 4:12 elapsed.
"We came out and played a pretty good second half," said Mohn. "I thought we deserved to win."
Isaac Gettis scored for the Rams, taking a penalty kick and drilling it on to the back of the net. It struck so hard that it bounced back out off the net about 10 yards from the goal mouth.
Mount Rainier went on to dominate the second half, but did not find the net again.
The Rams did not need to, as goalie Chase Casias and the Mount Rainier defense put together the sixth shutout of the year for the team.
Casias had to leave briefly in the second half because of an injury.
Mount Rainier will be at home at Highline Memorial playing Kentwood Tuesday, April 23 before going to Tahoma on Thursday, April 25. The Rams are at home against Auburn-Riverside Saturday, April 27.
All three matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Rams close out their season with a 3:30 p.m. visit to Thomas Jefferson at Federal Way Memorial Field Friday, May 3. The SPSL playoffs take place Wednesday, May 8.
