Burglar makes clean sweep of jewelry
May 16, 7:28 p.m., 6200 Block of 4th Ave NW -- A victim called police reporting that her home had been burglarized. The victim, who seems to have an impeccable inventory of her jewelry, listed the belongings that were missing: A Notre Dame class ring, a white gold sapphire ring, a sapphire ring with an aquamarine stone, two pearl necklaces, a Jakques Luman watch, gold earrings with jade earrings, and a platinum bracelet and ring set with sapphire and diamonds.
Police surmised that the burglar got in through the basement window, which had its latch damaged during forced entry and its screen window on the ground in the backyard. The police officer attempted to lift prints from the window but was unsuccessful. He left the victim a business card and follow-up forms.
‘He was getting in my face’
May 17, 11:37 p.m., 5400 Block of Ballard Ave NW -- A night out on town turned bloody when an altercation happened between people who were too drunk to speak coherently. The victim was just out hanging out with his friends, drinking heavily and going to the dive that they usually frequent, when the suspect and the victim exchanged some words (that no witnesses could articulate) and the suspect, apparently impassioned by whatever drunken words or gestures were traded, smashed a pint glass on the victim’s face.
The reason? The victim was “getting in his face,” the suspect told a police officer. The suspect said he did punch the victim in the face, but had nothing in his hand. However, broken glass lay outside of the bar and the victim had severe lacerations to his face and eyelid. Two witnesses identified the suspect, who was arrested on 22nd Ave NW and NW Market St without incident or injury. He was transported to the north precinct and subsequently King county Jail where he was booked for investigation of felony assault
The Seattle Fire Department responded to the scene and took the victim to the hospital. Police officers took photos of the victim’s injuries, but the victim was too intoxicated to recount what had happened. Staff believe the victim had damage to his eyeball and the victim may have been transported for further care, but the decision had not been made by the time police officers left.
‘Savvy’ victim avoids slashing, heckled by strangers
May 18, 3 a.m., 5700 Block of 24th Ave NW -- A police officer responded to a call at a store where an attempted assault had taken place. The suspect, a 20-something, athletic 5’4” Asian who was wearing an Oakland Athletics orange and green baseball cap, a blue polo shirt, dark jeans and white tennis shoes had attempted to slash the victim with his knife. The suspect was with another person, a thin, 20-something 6’0” white male with short brown hair.
The store employee said he had seen the suspect before and believed he lived in the area. The employee said that the suspect and victim appeared to have some kind of “beef” before entering the store, but the victim said that was not the case. Instead, the victim told police officers that he was walking from the bars when two people he had never met before started following and heckling him, calling him “douchebag” and “asshole.”
When the victim tried to duck into the store, the suspect and his friend followed. The suspect pulled a knife and took three or four swings at the victim, but missed every time because the victim claimed he was “savvy” -- meaning he stepped back from each swing.
The store employee, who did not witness the assault, showed a still picture from the in-store camera of the confrontation to police, showing the suspect facing the victim with his arms wide as if swinging.
The victim was not injured in any way, but said he hoped the suspect and his friend would be caught. The police officer provided the victim with a case number.
Who’s going to mow the lawn now?
May 20, 8:25 a.m., 5700 block of Greenwood Ave N -- A police officer responded to a report of a burglary. A neighbor said she witnessed an unknown woman enter her neighbor’s garage and remove the victim’s lawn mower. When the witness said something to the suspect, the suspect loaded the lawn mower into the back of an unknown tan SUV and fled northbound. The victim said his Toro lawn mower and Black and Decker weeder were stolen. The responding police officer gave the victim his business card with an incident number and departed the scene. An area check for suspects turned up negative.
