Celebrity softball next week
Former Seattle Mariners players Dan Wilson, Edgar Martinez and Jay Buhner will be reunited at Safeco Field on Saturday, June 15, for the Microsoft All-Star Softball Classic for Homeless Youth. Others schedule to suit up include Golden Tate of the Seattle Seahawks, Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament and former Sonics Gary Payton, Detlef Schrempf and Slick Watts.Tickets are $10 with all proceeds benefitting United Way of King County support and services for homeless youth.
West Seattle Legion wins
West Seattle has a new American Legion baseball team, and it slipped past host Bellevue by a 6-5 score Thursday.
UW men's alumni to play
Head coach Lorenzo Romar confirmed the creation of the University of Washington Men's Basketball Alumni Event, to be held Sunday, June 23 in Alaska Airlines Arena. The event will feature former Husky basketball stars returning to the hardwood, and is open to the public. The day will tip-off at 1 p.m. with a Legends Game which pairs two teams of UW standouts from years past. More-recent Huskies will then take stage for the Alumni Game, showcasing Huskies currently playing professionally. Fans will then be treated to a 3-point shootout, and a slam-dunk contest, likely to feature NBA Slam-Dunk Champions Nate Robinson and Terrence Ross. Tickets for the event cost $15, with children under 12 receiving free admission. Tickets can be purchased online at GoHuskies.com/Events.
Mariners events upcoming
The Seattle Mariners and Northwest Harvest team up on Saturday, June 8, for the 11th Annual Fight Hunger Day at Safeco Field when the Mariners take on the New York Yankees. Mariners Wives and volunteers will be outside the gates starting two hours before game time (1:10 p.m. first pitch) to collect donations of cash and non-perishable food. You can also donate online or by texting “ENDHUNGER” to 80888. A $10 donation to Northwest Harvest will appear on your monthly bill.
Friday, June 28, when the Mariners take on the Chicago Cubs, fans will be treated to a Safeco Field first, a post-game fireworks show from Pyro Spectaculars, the same company that produces the New Year’s Eve extravaganza at the Space Needle.On Saturday, June 29, the Mariners and Cubs turn back the clock to the early 1900s as the Mariners wear the uniforms of the 1909 Seattle Turks, and the Cubs wear their uniforms from the turn of the 20th Century. The Turks played one season in the old Northwestern League, winning the pennant with a record of 109-58. The first 20,000 fans will get a Turn Back the Clock poster, courtesy of Seattle Magazine. Emerald Downs hosts hoops
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament is coming to Auburn. Emerald Downs race track is hosting an inaugural tournament Aug. 10-11, 2013. Registration can be made online here.
The tournament will be set up in playoff brackets for people of all ages and levels of experience. Each division will be broken down into Recreation and Competitive playing brackets to ensure competitive games.
The cost to play is $120 per team (maximum of 4 players). Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of 3 games in the tournament and each player receives a tournament T-Shirt for participating. Details of rules are listed in the rules section of the website. Registration closes July 28.
Shootout scheduled for July
The fourth annual ShoWare Shootout 3 on 3 presented by Republic Services is set for July 27-28, 2013 at the ShoWare Center in Kent. The event, which is part of the Subway Washington Games, is the largest 3 on 3 basketball event in the Puget Sound area. The tournament drew 160 teams last year and more than that are expected to take part this year.
The ShoWare Shootout 3 on 3 offers divisions for all kinds of players from boys to girls to men and women. Basketball players of any age and size are invited to take part. A wheelchair division has also been part of the ShoWare Shootout 3 on 3 for the first three years.
Entry fee is $75 but if players sign up before June 30 the entry fee is $65 and includes a minimum of four games and two T Shirts.
