From Sustainable Ballard
Acting as a neighborhood partner in Waste Management’s Think Green Challenge, Sustainable Ballard was recognized for its efforts to encourage neighbors to reduce the garbage they send to the landfill. Sustainable Ballard will direct the $3,300 in prize money to help fund projects that support the Ballard Community.
“We’re proud of our Ballard friends and neighbors for their efforts to reduce their ‘waste lines,’” says Sustainable Ballard president Jenny Heins. “We’re thrilled that this money will go to helping those who are helping our community.”
Individuals and groups with a great new idea for helping the Ballard community are invited to apply for funding. Proposals must be for a new project initiated by a Ballardite and benefiting the neighborhood. Proposals, which are due by July 31, 2013, can be sent to info@sustainableballard.org and must include the following information:
1. Name, phone and email
2. Project description (including how the work will be done in Ballard)
3. Fund amount requested ($3,300 or less)
4. Timeline (Funds will be available by September 2013, and projects must be completed by December 2013.)
5. Recipients announced in early September
The Think Green Challenge, which ran from October 2012 to March 2013, invited ten neighborhoods to compete against each other for the biggest reduction in landfill waste. Partner organizations also competed for best education efforts.
Sustainable Ballard, the official community partner for Ballard in the contest, participated in a variety of creative outreach activities to encourage recycling and waste reduction — Christmas carols, a spring-cleaning swap, monthly tips, event booths, and a lively “I love recycling because ...” discussion on Facebook.
Sustainable Ballard split the $10,000 outreach prize with groups from two other Seattle neighborhoods. The $40,000 waste-reduction prize went to Greenwood/Phinney Ridge.
